Help! My mac is sick

I have a power mac running on 10.4 Panther. Recently, when I click to get on the internet, seconds later, a black screen appears saying I have to restart my computer. When I restart the computer, it loads up fine, but then when I click on any icon, the black screen reappears and says I need to restart my computer. How do I fix this??? Please help me:(

Re: Help! My mac is sick
see my recent thread entitled "crash help needed". It may answer some of your questions. I believe what you experienced is called a kernel panic. There are a number of possible causes but usually hardware-based. Hope this helps1

Re: Help! My mac is sick
indeed a Kernel Panic.
have you installed extra RAM or anything else lately?

repair permissions.
do you have any 3rd party disk utility such as DiskWarrior.

and FWIW, 10.4 is Tiger.
10.3 is Panther.

Applications >> Utilities >> Disk Utility.app

open that. select your HD then lower left, REPAIR PERMISSIONS

-Hi,
It wouldn't hurt to startup into 'Safe Boot' also. Sometimes it will help with little hiccups for troubleshooting. Peek Here

Re: Help! My mac is sick
-Hi,
Here is a tad more about Kernal Panics But as -Macnuke ask, have you added any additional RAM? Often times this can be the culprit, or some added software. NO, you don't have to Repair Permissions while in Safe Boot Mode. But it would help members if you have done anything recently to your Mac, ie. RAM, installed software, new printer & driver...things like that. Also, try using a different user account (create one if need be) and see if the KP still pops up. If it doesn't you know the snag is in YOUR account.

Re: Help! My mac is sick
I just got my first kernal panic today--so far, there's just been one. I haven't added any RAM or anything or made any changes to the computer other than installing an update for Microsoft Office 2004. I ran permission repair and the computer seems to be OK, at least for now. But does anyone have any idea of what I should expect now? Is a kernal panic something I should worry about happening again? Is it the start of or sign of a larger problem?
Thanks,
Sylvia

Hi -Sylvia,

Probably not ::guessing:: There's been cases where a KP happens for unknown reasons, and then NO more. More like the Mac just plain out got confuzzled. I wouldn't worry about it unless it continues to happen. It usually is due to hardware...bad RAM, tired video card, etc, but it can also be a software issue. Often times you can get a clue as to whats going on by viewing the Console: HD/Applications/Utilities/Console App/in the menu click Logs/toggle Library/Logs to view Panic.log. Peek there for any info that might give a hint as to the KP.

Re: Help! My mac is sick
Hi Doug,
Thanks for your suggestion. I tried that and found the following: "panic(cpu 0): lockmgr: locking against myself." You're right, it sounds like my iMac became temporarily confused. I also found signs of a panic kernal in May, which I never noticed. Something to keep an eye on, I guess.
Thanks,
Sylvia
