New DVD writer

They say these work with Powerbooks, but I'm still skeptical. Does anyone have an external DVD writer that works without Apple's $1000 iDVD software?

I wonder if their downloadable DVD authoring software can play my PC MPEG2 files...I will try it later this evening. If it can, wow, no need to wait for Quicktime 6 to play my old PC MPEG2 CD's.

iDVD is not a $1000. iDVD is a software that comes with every Mac purchased and the upgrade is $19.99. You are thinking of DVD Studio Pro 1.5.

Okay, my understanding is the Pioneer DVR-A04 is the drive Apple ships in their computers. I have heard conflicting reports as to if you use this drive to replace your internal CD/DVD/CDRW drive, it will work just like an original SuperDrive from Apple (ie work with iDVD). Anybody have any confirmation on this?

The problem is that you can't use iDVD with an external burner, so you would have to use DVD Studio Pro.

this drive looks interesting, but the software sucks. all it did was encode the video. unless i'm missing something it looks lik you can't do any menus or anything at all like iDVD.
