Does Mail work with anything but a .mac account?

I got mail to work with my hotmail account via an app I found on versiontracker.com called a POPper, effectively giving my hotmail account a...you know what? I have no idea what I'm talking about. I just know that there was a day where I got it to download my mail from hotmail.
I read my mail and deleted a bunch of it, then went to get mail again, and everything I deleted was still there. Clearly this whole thing didn't work.

So I'm wondering if I can use Mail with anything but a .mac account. I guess what I'm saying is that I don't want to pay for a .mac account, but I want to use Mail's connectivity with addressbook, etc. What am I to do?

Mail is a full-fledged mail client. It will work with any ISP that does POP or IMAP. I sure don't have .Mac and Mail works for me.

Re: Does Mail work with anything but a .mac account?
Aloha Nicholas,

I'm at work (on a Windows box ) so I'm going from memory, but to answer your questions, yes Mail can work with other than .Mac accounts. I, for example, use Road Runner. On one of the initial Mail setup screens, .Mac is the default selection, but if you click that button, you'll see other entries, such as POP, IMAP, etc... In my case, I chose POP, then entered my email address, pop and smtp server information, logon and password, then sat back and started working with Mail.

On the downloaded messages issue, look at Mail's preferences. Different email programs have different default actions with respect to downloaded messages. For example, Microsoft Outlook deletes all downloaded message from the server immediately upon the user downloading them. Mac's Mail, on the other hand, leaves them on the server for 10 days, if I remember correctly. There is a setting in Mail's preferences (I'll look it up after I get home, if no one has shown you where that is before then) that dictates Mail's default action. If, for example you set it to perform the same as Outlook, then once you download your mail messages to Mail, they are also deleted (removed) from the mail server. Then, when you check your mail again, you will no longer receive the message you previously thought were deleted as new messages.

I hope that will help you. Of course, if you need any further clarification or would like any additional information, please don't hesitate to let me know and I'll try to make it "as clear as mud."

P.S. I've only had my iMac for 10 days, and I can already answer Mac-related questions - it feels great to provide some assistance to a fellow Mac user, considering how much assistance I've received

Okay just went through adding gmail to Mail.app on the mac. Kind of easy found the incoming mail servers for gmail easy enough.
But Yahoo wants you to subscribe to something to get POP to work on yahoo. It's like $19.99/year (or as they say less than $2/month). I don't get much yahoo email anyway.

Google Gmail Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.gmail.com (SSL enabled, port 995)
Outgoing Mail Server - use the SMTP mail server address provided by your local ISP

Yahoo! Mail Plus service. This service allows you to use Outlook Express or another POP3 client to access and manage your Yahoo! Mail messages.
