Problem installing new 111 D Pioneer combo drive

I just tried to intsall a replacement combo drive in my G 5. Bought a Pioneer 111D to replace the Pioneer 106 that came in the computer. The replacement was a little shorter in length, but otherwise seemed identical in other dimensions.

Apple instructions for G 5 replacement of optical drive (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/PMG5_OpticalDrive_DIY.pdf#search="replacing%20combi%20drive%20in%20G%205") say the new drive should come with new standoffs, the little screw-in pegs that keep the drive positioned and locked into place. My new drive from New Egg didn't come with anything.

I used the standoffs from the original drive. Got everything put back together, and - GRRRR! - the tray is just a fraction of an inch too high to clear the outer case and open. Gets stuck on the upper lip of the metal case.

Not sure of any way to adjust it, since the standoffs screw in, and the drive levers need to lock in to keep it securely in place.

Anyone have any experience with this, and know how I might get the drive situated to open freely?

Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!

Re: Problem installing new 111 D Pioneer combo dri
Hi
Usually this is corrected by taking the cosmetic end off of the tray ( face plate ).

Taken from Apple PowerMac G5 tech docs, G5 software updates<!--color-->

Note on Optical Drive Swaps/Upgrades:
Also as a FYI - according to a reader report and the notes on the Apple CIP Guide for replacing the optical drive (see this FAQ item for Apple's G5 CIP page/Guides) - there are different base screws (standoffs) for the OEM Sony DVD burner and the Pioneer DVD burners and the Combo drives. (A reader with the OEM DW-U10A sony drive replaced it with a Pioneer DVR-107 drive and said the screw/standoffs from the Sony drive resulted in the Pioneer drive's tray not causing interference with the G5's CD drop-down door/cover. (He had already removed the drive's front tray bezel, which is required regardless. For the Pioneer DVR-107D drive, you press out and up on the lower tray bezel edge to clear the retaining tabs, then you can slide it up and off the tray front edge.)
He mentioned he ordered the correct screws from Apple (normally apple does not sell parts like this to end users - so contact a local apple dealer to order them if you need to.).

mine popped right in and works like a champ.

did you remember to remove the face plate on the drives door?
it will not function due to a clearance problem if you do not.

Re: Problem installing new 111 D Pioneer combo drive
what I am referring to is the drive door...... err not door on the G5.. on the drive itself.
when the tray comes out.. there is a vertical face plate attached to it. it snaps on and off pretty easy.
but it has to be off to work in the G5's

not the G5 door
not the large faceplate that covers the drive.

when the tray slides out. there is a vertical plate on the front.
it's snapped on to the front edge of the tray.

that's what needs to come off.

Hi
I've outlined what we are speaking of in red --> Image

If you have trouble remvoing it, I should be able to make a quick video demonstration tomorrow. I don't have such a drive available right now. It's pretty simple but I don't feel I could explain how to do it verbally in a non-confusing way.

I bought my 111 from OWC.. they include a one page blurb with that note to remove it for all G5 installations.
they are nice like that

kewl

one of the reasons I like OWC... even if it's a photocopy of a cheaply done hand drawn picture.. it's worth a thousand words and almost the same in frustrated hair pulling.

sometimes.... that 3 dollars you saved wasn't such a deal.
