Wow
I had my doubts that they'd hit under $200 US but they've beat that by %15. That presents me with a tough decision myself. I can get an Xbox and the HD DVD drive bundled for less than $499 which is Toshiba's price on their entry level dedicated player.

Heck I should stay away from the Xbox360 because I could get hooked on Xbox Live and that would not be cool

Re: Wow
Wow, I'm really surprised how cheap that is.

I assume it's possible they'll include a HD drive built in, in a future rev of the 360?

A Taiwan newspaper reported that Microsoft just place a huge order with Liteon for low profile HD DVD drives. Evidently the Xbox add on is made from Toshiba so it lends credence to the fact that next year may see a HD DVD based Xbox 360

Not surprised....
I'm not at all surprised at the relatively inexpensive price of the X-Box with HD DVD. We already know MS sells this game console at a loss in hoping to surpass Sony. Sounds like they are kicking in a few more subsidy $$ to make the X-Box a compelling buy.

M$'s tactics shouldn't surprise anyone. They expect to be in the red on X-Box, Zune, MSN, and pretty much everything else while the OS client and server division, along with their Office division keeps all of MS in the black. Ah to have unlimited hordes of $$$$....

Cheers,
Bondster!!

Everybody keeps comapring prices...
Just to compare feature-wise:

PS3 premium - $600 (incl: wireless, BluRay)

XBox 360 premium - $400
Wireless Adaptor - $100
HD-DVD Drive ~ $200

Total cost of 360 ~= $700
Total cost of PS3 = $600

Feature for feature PS3 is LESS EXPENSIVE!!!

Re: Everybody keeps comapring prices...
it's their last ditch effort to make some sales worth spitting at in Japan.
Sales has been utterly dismal here.
Everyone is waiting for the PS3 here.
also, even though the original PS2 came with a built in DVD player, DVD movies and players only really became mass market in Japan over the last 2 years!
2 years ago, set top DVD players cost over 200USD here. now you can get the 40USD chinese off brand models just like in the US.
But 2 years ago, most video rental shops had pathetic DVD selections here too!
i assure you all, the Japanese consumers are not scrambling for Hi-Definition video. (they call it Hi-Vision here anyway, but it's still highly non-compelling.)
Who really cares about a few more lines of picture, the difference is not much for the price at this point (the TV price)

Add to that...there is no true HDMI on the xBox either (YET?). The xbox360 does not have a digital video board so any HDMi cable will have to be converted from Component or VGA. Which, I would assume, would apply to HD-DVD's being played through the system as well.

I assume that the external HD-DVD drive will have to have it's own HDMI output, but no news to confirm or deny this yet.

Wow, that's a great price point. Makes me somewhat more satisfied with my Xbox 360 purchase.

Not only that, but the PS3 is in one package. This HD-DVD drive supposedly is external. That's one more thing for the kids to target and break.

Re: Microsoft to add HD DVD to Xbox 360
What's amazing is Microsoft has made it so game developers can't develop games on HD DVD nor can they develop games that require a hard drive. To me, this means the games are more limited on the Xbox 360 than the PS3.

Am I wrong?

That might be true, but the problem is that you cannot buy the PS3 in smaller segments. I wouldn't mind a cheaper PS3 for users who don't need Blu-Ray sized storage.

DELL computers and Mac computers are similarly priced feature for feature for entry level desktop systems, but DELL appears cheaper because DELL allows you to add and subtract portions. People usually look at the bottom line prices. In real life, cheaper usually wins.
