itools/.mac e-mail will remain free

I just read this post on macintouch and thought I should let the people on thos board know before they all sign up to .mac to be able to use the e-mail on the portable. I just signed up a few minutes ago, but I wanted the bigger iDisk, so it's fine with me. My wife though only wants e-mail, so she will just go with that feature alone.

Here is the original post:

It appears I may have found the answer to part of my first question. After logging into my iTools/.Mac account, I found some new Help topic links. In the e-mail help, I found this:

Converting your .Mac trial account to an email-only account

IMPORTANT: If you choose to convert your trial account to an email-only account, all your data files on Apple's servers (except for email messages) will be removed. Other .Mac services, such as iDisk, HomePage, Backup, and Virex, are not accessible to email-only accounts.

To convert your trial account to email-only, go to www.mac.com. Click Account in the ..Mac menu bar, then click the Email Account Management button. Enter the member name and password of the trial account you'd like to convert, then click Convert.

Print your account information for future reference, then click Continue.

So - it appears you DON'T have to go the $100 year route if all you want is e-mail or you just need a second account. Another help topic indicates:

Adding an email-only account

..Mac members can purchase up to 10 additional email accounts for $10.00 each per year. Email-only accounts include 5 megabytes (MB) of storage space, which can't be increased. You can't add photo signatures to messages if you have an email-only account; and other .Mac services, such as iDisk, HomePage, Backup, and Virex, are not accessible to email-only accounts.

So there you have it. But they apparently aren't advertising this e-mail account only thing too much.

i think this is only true if you are already a member of the services and you spent the $50, because i tried what you posted and there is not way for me to go into the Email Account Management

any ideas?
