Video not working in iTunes

I've posted on a few other forums and nobody has been able to help me out with this. I think my Mac hates me for some reason. Anyway, here's the problem. If anyone can help me out I'd greatly appreciate it.

I have an ibook (G4) and I'm running 10.4.2 I have the most current upgrade of iTunes (7.01 unless there's a more recent one I'm unaware of) and video doesn't work at all in it. It works just fine on every other computer I've tried it on, and I can't for the life of me figure out the problem. I'm dying to add some mp4 videos to my iPod but I can't get this to function.

I've tried reverting to older versions of iTunes. I've tried removing and re-installing iTunes. I've tried various different videos and none work (all of them work just fine on other machines). I'm really at a loss as to why the videos won't work in iTunes.

I've tried adding them to my playlist both by just dragging them off the desktop and into the playlist, as well as by using the "import" function. I've tried control-clicking the files on the desktop and using "oopen with" iTunes. In the latter example, if iTunes is open, nothing happens at all. If iTunes is closed when I do "open with" iTunes opens up, but doesn't open the file or do anything with it.

I'm completely at a loss. Like I said... it only seems to be an issue on this computer. I'm hoping there's an easy fix that I've totally overlooked, but at this point I feel like I've tried everything and haven't been able to get any video at all to work in iTunes on this machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Alternately, are there other programs out there that are capable of adding video to an iPod other than iTunes? I know there are iTunes alternatives for music, and for getting music/videos/files off iPods and onto the computer's hard drive, but I haven't found any that are capable of adding video to an iPod other than iTunes.

My entertainment on my drive home is depending on this! Please help! haha

Re: Video not working in iTunes
Try dropping your video on iSquint (free):

web page

It'll format for iPod and even put the output in
your iTunes library if you want.

If you're still having trouble with iTunes 7, try
repairing permissions.

Re: Video not working in iTunes
First off, why not install the updates to OS X to go to the current version of 10.4.8?

Also, how did you create these videos? What codecs and settings did you use?

Re: Video not working in iTunes
I have been having the same problem with Itunes not playing my ripped movies (I use Handbrake).

Check to see if you have the newest version of Quicktime. Videos will NOT play and will NOT transfer to your Ipod unless you are running Quicktime 7.1.3

Once I upgraded everything was fixed.

Although I still can't find my Music Videos anywhere.... =/

Hope everything works out

Re: Video not working in iTunes
I have the exact same problem. I have done everything that albertdiamond has done to fix it and more, but nothing seems to work. I am using the newest iTunes (7.02) on Mac OS X 10.3.9. I am sure that the mp4 files are good because they transfer to iTunes fine on other computers and because QuickTime is able to open them. No error pops up. Absolutely nothing happens. I can add mp3 files to iTunes, but i cannot add mp4's. I tried changing the extension to m4v, but that did not work either. I think that I am going to give up soon.

Re: Video not working in iTunes
Just because video play in iTune doesn't mean they can play on the iPod. Whichever tool you use to encode the video isn't really important, but you have to be sure your video isn't bigger than 720x480. The bitrate is also important, but I don't remember the limit. If you use instant handbrake, those settings are already set to work for the iPod.

Re: Video not working in iTunes
Handbrake is for DVD converter, I have avi file in my computer, I have no problem in converting it using visual hub or isquint, the file doesn't appear. Maybe the problem is my itunes, can you rocommend something?

Re: Video not working in iTunes
No experience with this set-up, but make sure you have the latest version of quicktime, iTune and the iPod firmware. As I said, wichever app you use, you have to configure it so the format and size is supported by the iPod.
Maybe you could also give a try to Hanbrake, maybe it can work on something else than DVD (but I never tried it)

I'm sure I have the latest version. Isquint and visual hub have options for ipod conversion. I followed all the requirements but still whenever I drag the video file nothing happens...

Can't help anymore for now, but I may try some test when I have spare time. I just can't do any promise.

I use iSquit and VisualHub (and then Parsley is Atomically Delicious to tag) all the time to convert files on my computer for playback on the iPod. What do you mean nothing happens when you drag the file? You drag the .mp4 file from your desktop to the Library in iTunes and you don't get a plus sign showing you can copy it?
