Hands on with PlayStation 3

Now that he's spent a weekend with the PlayStation 3, Martyn Williams has a different opinion of Sony's new game console. more

Re: Hands on with PlayStation 3
I was reading an article over on www.ign.com and they explained that HD cables (component video, specifically) that work with the PS2 can work with the PlayStation3. Maybe that's why they didn't include a cable in the box. I, for one, certainly don't want to pay for a cable I don't need. The PS3 will be expensive enough!

I would have liked more information about compatibility between the Mac and PS3.

And Playstation 3 is relevant because. . .?

Because because because because because, because of the wonderful things it does.

And. Seeing how most all Mac's are so lame at gaming, many around here rely on consoles to get our game on.

Re: Hands on with PlayStation 3
A small number of Mac users are Mac gamers, but I'd be willing to bet that a larger portion of Mac users actually game on other platforms.

The PS3 features advanced CPU and GPU technology... similar to the stuff we'd like to see in our Macs.

And if you read the article carefully, you'd have seen this cliffhanger sentence:

The PS3s versatility is just going to grow as other uses are found for the console. Especially intriguing is the Install other OS option in the menu.

Could the PS3 run OS X? That would be intriguing and directly relevant to the Macintosh community. However, since this is a "first look" kind of article, I'll give the author the benefit of the doubt and assume he lacked the time to answer that question.

Re: Hands on with PlayStation 3
Higher-res, bells & whistles; all are marketing-based distractions from the real purpose of a game console. Whether its a debate over which platform or operating system is best for gaming, it all boils down to the same thing as a government election, who's the least worst.

There hasn't been any innovation in gaming in over 7 years. The only notable departures from either speeding into a wall or keeping track of your hit points and weapons were the more cerebral Myst and Sims series, but those too have become old and poorly copied to nauseam. It seems like all true inspiration and true creativity of early programmers and designers have drifted into retirement with their quick millions. The current flood of college grads seem quite prepared to exercise their new knowledge to make better animations and faster CPUs, but there is a distinct void of true innovation in the gaming sector.

New game console? Faster? Internet connection? Yaaawwwnnnn! Mac's don't have the games of XP? No one has any decent games; 0=0!

A new concept in gaming, regardless of platform, would pique my interest much more than a new processor, a plastic case and a HDTV connector. How about something other than flashy variations of "Hunt the Wumpus" (Commodore) and "Night Driver" (Atari)?

If the PS3 doesn't have a decent version of Gauntlet Legends I don't want to know from it...

This has absolutely nothing to do with "the current flood of college grads" and everything to do with the business of video games.

Video game development has become a very, very staid business because it costs millions to make a decent game. Companies tend to be very conservative when millions of dollars are invested, so they only invest in games that are tried and true, based on ideas that have made money before.

Even companies headed up by people with proven track records have trouble getting new ideas out the door. Take Cyan Worlds, for example -- the company headed up by Rand Miller, and the company responsible for Myst and its sequels. The company's had little trouble getting other Myst games made, but when they decided after the development of Myst IV that they wanted to head in a new direction, they almost had to shut down because they couldn't get the backing of a major publisher. There are stories like that everywhere you look in the game industry.

Budgets have spiraled out of control because it costs that much to create a product that consumers want to buy -- 3D graphics and smooth animation and cinematic artwork don't come cheap, requiring teams of dozens of programmers and artists. Unlike games like, as you said, Hunt the Wumpus and Night Driver, that were completed by one or two programmers and done on very short budgets.

Well, I did just that. Since, the vast majority of the posts regarding this topic are responses to my deleted post, I invite them to pick up the debate at my new post on the Web Site Feedback forum.

The download was fast too. It felt like Sonys server was next door to my house. It took about 20 seconds to download an 80MB trailer, which is one of the fastest downloads Ive experienced.

Oh, sure. Rub it in, why don'tcha? Just because most of us here in the US can't get 32Mbps+ broadband at home like they do in Japan...

Damn telco/DSL and cable monopolies.

Fair enough, sorry I stepped outta line.

There are several non-gaming functions including a music player, movie player, picture viewer and Internet browser.

I would be interested to know if the PS3 could work with iTunes to stream music (and if I ever decide to buy them from the iTunes Store, movies) directly from my mac. I'd also like to know what the music/video nav interface looks like. iTunes' strength is in its simple navigation, whereas I've always heard that other MP3 players' nav systems aren't as easy to use. If it connected with iTunes and leveraged its interface, it would probably kill the iTV, but might make Apple some $$$ in licensing? Just some random thoughts to tie this thread back into macs :-)
