limewire not installing properly?

ok im just getting back into macs and this is my first round with OSX... you can see my setup in my sig and the G4 runs like a dream but im trying to install a couple of apps that i need like Firefox and Limewire...firefox loads fine..but once limewire installs i cant actually seem to use it or open it...it downloads and installs properly on my main drive... my desktop has new icons that i dont know what they are for : Two white drive icons that say "Limewire", a drive icon that says "Firefox", then some others labeled LimeWireOSX.dmg, LimeWireOSX-1.dmg, and Firefox 2.0.dmg...what do i do with these..they are cluttering my desktop up and limewire still wont open up for me...this mac is useless if i cant download..HELP...im sorry for the jumbled post...

They're not installed. Sounds like you ran Firefox from the disk image.

What you have on the desktop - the "drive icons" are disk images, a virtual disk, if you will - treat it like a CD or any other removable media. You need to open these, then, in the case of Firefox, drag the Firefox icon from there to your Application folder. With Limewire, I can't recall, the opened disk image might have an installer, or it too is a drag and drop. After that, eject the images by dragging the "drive icons" to the trash. What's left, the .dmg - you may want to keep in case you need to reinstall sometime.

Once that's done, you can start the apps from their spot in the applications folder.


"LimeWireOSX.dmg, LimeWireOSX-1.dmg" just means that you downloaded two copies.

Trash the Limewire folder and reinstall from the disk image. If it happens again you may have a corrupted installer. Did you get it from the Limewire site or elsewhere?
