Head spinning Microsoftian payoffs

Microsoft to pay Novell $440 million for coupons entitling users to a years worth of maintenance and support on SUSE Linux to its customers.... A key element of the agreement now appears to be Novells $40 million payment to Microsoft in exchange for the latter companys pledge not to sue SUSE Linux users...

<hr />
Microsoft pays Novel $440 million. Of which Novel returns $40 million as licensing fees, according to Balmer, to get the appropriate economic return for our shareholders from our innovation. Is that a hand slap, payoff, or just plain stupidity!?!

In a question-and-answer session after his keynote speech at the Professional Association for SQL Server (PASS) conference in Seattle, Ballmer said Microsoft was motivated to sign a deal with SUSE Linux distributor Novell earlier this month because Linux uses our intellectual property and Microsoft wanted to get the appropriate economic return for our shareholders from our innovation.

<hr />

You don't usually see the words "Microsoft" and "innovation" in the same sentence, unless it's from a Microsoft employee, or the words "lack of" appear between them. Ballmer probably didn't specify any details, because MS lawyers are already preparing a court case. Considering how much intellectual property MS "borrowed" from Apple, their hypocrisy just astounds.

Re: Head spinning Microsoftian payoffs
Novel gets $440 mill in coupons and Microsoft gets $40 mill in cash. Pretty good deal for hollow threat from MS.

Oh please mister computing god who we can not exist without, don't throw us into the brier patch. Novel is a bunch spineless fools that should have attacked MS for patent and intellectual property infringement when they had the chance.

I think it's just an futile attempt to try and hold market share Linux is taking from them... if all else fails, (because of the US corrupt legal system), the UK surely will call Microsoft's bluff....

Ballmer Must Be On Crack Again
Ballmer must live in a parallel universe or perhaps he lives in Alice's looking glass world where everything is topsy-turvy. In the real world the rest of us live in, Microsoft is the one who steals intellectual property form everyone else. If we accounted for every idea that Microsoft has stolen over the years, Microsoft would not be worth a termite ridden, wooden nickel.

Someone please slap some sense into Ballmer!

I disagree -- Microsoft is largely based on borrowed software ideas and has made a business out of imitation (witness the flagrant design of Zune, except for the innovative ugly brown, of course). Linux is an operating system based on unix, therefore they have stolen Microsoft's business model of basing your system entirely on a preexisting one (DOS was CPM with minor changes; Windows was a crappy take on MacOS, albeit with Apple's permission).

Re: Ballmer: Linux users owe Microsoft
The whole issue of "borrowing" "intellectual property" with regards to software is becoming ridiculous. Sure, maybe Linux has taken stuff from Microsoft. And no doubt Microsoft has borrowed from Linux. It's also taken from Apple. And Apple's taken a few things from Microsoft (believe it or not). Apple's also taken some stuff from Linux. Linux has taken stuff from Apple. Everyone's taking stuff from everyone else. Drop the lawsuits already.

I think Balmer should be fired for his stupidity. Ever since he started leading things Microsoft has gone down hill faster than ever. Oh wait, maybe he should stay so I can watch the linux community kick his ass!

Re: Ballmer: Linux users owe Microsoft
Ballmer has always acted very questionably, in my opinion.

Remember when the Newton was being introduced, and he tried to get in to see it, but only people with press credentials could get in, so when the cab pulled up with all of the press materials, Ballmer tried to grab them and run off?

How about back before Microsoft had a database, and Borland was hosting a database conference at their site -- and Microsoft people were caught copying files from Borland employees' machines in their offices, away from the conference area? (I'd heard it suggested that this was a Ballmer-planned raid but I really don't have any confirmation of that one.)

Maybe Ballmer also needs to go after Al Gore, because maybe he feels that Microsoft really invented the internet. I gotta wonder if Microsoft's illegally infringing code is the same imaginary code that SCO was claiming to be in use.

Re: Ballmer: Linux users owe Microsoft
Everybody knows that:

Apple Innovates (rarely copies, and if it does, improves tremendously like with the Mac idea from Xerox from the DoD).
Microsoft copies Apple.
Linux copies from all it can

And what? Everybody knows that...
