What kind of things could software on your computer do to add functionality to your phone?

Out-of-the-box Features:
- Same ease of use and syncing that the iPod has.
- The ability to purchase ringtones, create ringtones using QT Pro and/or edit songs to create a personal ringtone.
- The ability to use the cell carrier's data line to sync your address book, calendar, bookmarks, iPhoto and Mail (which will include to-do lists in Leopard's Mail), if you have a .Mac account.
- Bluetooth wireless, but no 802.11.
- Same USB 2.0 cable and power supply used on the iPod.

Eventual Features:
- Use the cell carrier's data line to stream of your iTunes content from your Mac(s) to your iPhone using Quicktime's Streaming Server software. Just like what Slingbox does.
- The ability to purchase iTunes media directly from the phone.
- Special phone widgets that can be made by anyone but are form factored for the iPhone's limited screen size.
- The abilty to instantly photocast pictures you've just taken on your phone via your .Mac account.
- Parental Control capabilities on iPhones which is similair to what is available on OS X.
-Codecs that let me play AVI, OGG, etc. on my iPhone.

Someone been reading Roughly Drafted lately?

Uh, no. Also, I submitted this for editorial review late last week, before that piece was posted.

Re: Editors' Notes Weblog: Chasing the iPhone
As long as the iPhone can be used as a tethered EV-DO or HSDPA modem for my iBook, I'll buy two.

My detailed description of what might be in an Apple higher end device is here. It's a GSM phone with 16:9 touch screen, video iPod, Apple Remote Desktop and more. It's very possible! -Mike from myallo.com

Wow Mike. Cool. I think Apple could get some style points by offering, at least as a novelty option, the capability to truly dial, old-school-style, a number using an on-screen graphic of a classic telephone dial, complete with sound effects.

Other features:

GPS
Beeper/Pager
Push-to-talk
Landline telephony (corded or cordless)
External modem for any USB computer
VoIP
Sat phone (Iridium etc)
Scanning
Faxing (including rare COLOR faxes)
Bar code reading
Radio reception (AM/FM/XM/Sirius/weather/shortwave/scanner)
Radio transmittal (CB/ham/walkie-talkie/business and marine)
Videophoning
Broadcast and sat TV reception (analog/digital, standard and hi-def)
Instant messaging
Bootable storage medium
Flashlight
Laser pointer
Electronic mirror (via camera)
High-end 3D handheld console gaming (with TV output)
And last but not least,
Telegrams.

Battery life shmattery life. Cost shmost! Hop to it Apple!
