The 22nd Annual Editors' Choice Awards

Every year, Macworld reviews hundreds of products, everything from Apple's newest desktops and laptops to smaller utilities from smaller developers that do things you never thought you needed done. But which ones were the most useful or innovative? Which ones will we still be using a year from now? Which ones were really the best--in terms of both quality and value? Answering these questions is what the Editors' Choice Awards are all about. more

A SATA drive by any other name...
Hold on a second, Lone Ranger! The OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Quad Interface FireWire 800/400 + USB2 2.0 + eSATA hard drive appears to use the same enclosure as the G Drive, has the same complement of ports, the same features... and the 500GB version costs $299 instead of $459.

Considering that these two products appear to be so similar except for price, how is it that the more expensive productthe G Drivegets a special award? As I'm sure you already know, there are no flies on OWC drives in the performance department.

No MacBook Pro? I'm crushed. After all, the MacBook, the Mac Pro and the (24-inch) iMac all made the list.

Re: The 22nd Annual Editors' Choice Awards
I would guess that they didn't pick the MacBook Pro because it's more or less what the PowerBook used to be in the context of the Mac line. No doubt, it's far more powerful, but it's relatively similar. On the other hand, the MacBook set a new standard for consumer-level notebooks, providing excellent performance for a fairly low price. The Mac Pro, as noted, improved wildly with regards to performance and component design and placement (e.g., far more expansion room). The iMac is a very high-end machine for one billed as a consumer buy.

I agree. I like laptops and I like the Pro models. What I don't get is why Apple reduced the number of choices. 2 Pro models and 1 consumer model. I like my 12" Powerbook. It's small for taking with me, however it's powerful when connected to a large monitor at home. The MacBook doesn't have a high end graphics card and it can't power the 30" Apple display.

Phone Valet
It's now version 5.0. I like the product. I like that I can keep messages without having an answering machine fill up. And the messages are on my computer where I can access them easily.

One thing I would like to see them add is hardware that would continue to take messages if the computer is turned off.

Wow... AfterEffects 7 gets an award? I don't think ANY Adobe product should even qualify until they go UB. AfterEffects specficly should be disqualified with it's performance under Rosetta being substandard combined with the absolute absence of any support for mactel users... Right?

Best of best of best is the Mac mini...

Becasue it is EXTREMELY QUIET. A whisper. Bedroom class!

At least in the absence of a true fanless Mac!

A Mac without fans? I doubt you'll find one of those in THIS forum.

As custodian of a G5 iMac that's prone to droning cool-down fits, I hear what you're saying about the silent mini. Or I would if you'd just speak up a bit...

Cheers,

Jim
