Re: Apple unveils iPhone
Remember, US law has just made it legal to unlock phones. I have a feeling this one will be very easy to unlock. I also wouldn't be surprised if the ones you buy from the Apple store are already unlocked.

By the way, I told you folks so! They laughed when I touted my page HERE that describes something very much like this iPhone back in October! One thing I predict there that wasn't mentioned was Apple Remote Desktop, which would allow controlling and transferring with any other computer. But with a mini OSX inside, I think it is still very possible..

Question for you tech guys - How can Apple run OS X in a cell phone? Is there a processor inside?

<hr />

Every cell phone is a computer. Every iPod is a computer. They all run an OS, whether PalmOS, Pocket PC, Symbian, Linux, or something else. This one runs Mac OS X. Cool.

Zune employees... start your copiers
The Zune product manager making the comments on iPod Phone (iPhone) before the unveiling was really caught off guard.. his remarks seem so goofy and antiquated all within the span of hours.....

Re: Apple unveils iPhone
Do the phone applications have scroll buttons and scroll bars on the screen? If I'm scrolling through long web pages, text messages, or contact lists, then having to drag every page up the screen one by one is going to be very time consuming.

Re: Apple unveils iPhone
Hey I saw your little illustration, it was neat but I think many envisioned devices with similar form factors.... I do have to say the coolest thing about the iPhone is its interface. Just when you thought no one can possibly improve the click wheel... Baaammmmm here comes Apple, not only they managed to make the click wheel look clunky... but they managed to make every device that has the circular innuendos of a click wheel totally obsolete.

Stand aside Blackberry
Lookout Palm
Go away Samsung
RIP Nokia
and learn a thing or two Sony

Apple just made itself a lot enemies boy!

That'd be nice, but considering the phone probably isn't making Apple much of a profit (most cell phones cost more to make than they sell for), I doubt that's the case. Especially when you consider that even a $39/mo plan for 2 years would be over $900, that's definitely not the case!

<hr />

Actually, I think that IS the case. When the Cingular guy got up on stage after Jobs announced the prices, he said something like "By the way, that includes the conract--FYI." (At least according to the live updates I was reading.)

<hr />

Can anyone else confirm this? That the price DOES include the contract costs?
Aaargh! Where's the Keynote transcript?! Weren't there any stenographers on hand?
Okay, patience. All shall be revealed in due course...
But seriously, didn't someone have a Talk-to-Type app running?

Hopefully we'll see a GPS navigation app for the iPhone that works with a Bluetooth GPS receiver. I won't consider buying an iPhone until that's available.

<hr />

Better yet, I'd like to see a GPS receiver built into the device.

<hr />

Arn't cell phones in the USA required to have built in GPS ( for 911 calls )?

Well... its not Linksys, and Steve Jobs did tell us during his keynote, that Apple bought the name
rights (iPhone) yesterday. So I would assume that it's safe to say - NO lawsuit!

Yeah we all Mac users in my area use Cingular because Verizon cripples the phones to not work with iTunes. Verizon sucks and are not Mac friendly. My daughter is a customer rep for Verizon and just shakes her head in disbelief at the company. She uses a Mac by the way.

Those types of GPS are called "Assisted GPS". They cannot function independently like a normal GPS receiver. Instead, Assisted GPS uses the cell phone network to communicate with your carrier's servers and determine your position. This of course means additional fees for non-emergency use. Some Windows Mobile devices such as the HP iPaq have true GPS receivers which don't require the mobile carrier's blessing in order to work.

Steve didn't say anything, but on the screen it said "2-year contract" next to the price of the phone. That means you'll pay that price and will need to pay monthly charges (at whatever level Cingular requires) for 24 months.

$600 (rounding up) for the 8GB phone (plus a contract reservation of sorts), and then you pay for a 2-year contract?

Or, if I understand, it's $600 for both a phone and all the voice/data service for 2 years? That would be a huge bargain, although I'd wonder what the voice/data service would cost per month/year after the end of 2 years.

<hr />

I can guarantee you that it does not include two years of service. Cingular is happy to subsidize the cost of the phone to get you on the hook for a two-year contract. That's how cell phone companies work.

Yeah, Verizon has a bad rep for that. But I'm using a Treo, which syncs beautifully with my Mac. And I could put music onto my SD card just as easily, if I wanted to... but I much prefer an iPod.

I went with Verizon because they have the best coverage in my area... and, oh yeah, because I get a significant discount through a B2B arrangement with my employer. I switched from U.S. Cellular last summer with a 2 year contract, so even if I had any confidence in any GSM carrier's coverage around here I'm not changing any time soon.

The iPhone sounds cool for the iPod nano crowd, but it's not a "real" iPod without a disk... and as far as I'm concerned it's not a phone with GSM. Bummer. Not that a Mac OS X palmtop isn't tempting all on its own...

I don't need the color screen. I need NOT to have a camera. I can get the sync capability elsewhere. I don't even really care that it plays music. I WANTED a TELEPHONE with Apple panache, not a multimedia access-fee sucker for Cingular. This makes me sad.

Well, when you take away all the features you describe, what the hell would be the difference between an Apple phone and your Star-Tac? Pretty buttons? Amazing you would think with all the talent at Apple they should just take a hack phone and slap their logo on it.

Either you know little of Apple, or are just trying to bring down the morale.
