20 GB iPod to come out August 1st

I just came back from the Tampa Apple Store at the International Plaza. I was hoping to get a look at the new iPods and their improvements but was told they did not have any yet. I was told though that according to a recent memo send out by Apple the 20 GB iPod will come out on Agust 1st. That would be the coming Thursday. Rejoice, ignore me, do what you will. The fact that I was told to the face by a representative of Apple is enough proof for me. I plan to drop by the Apple store Thursday morning.

i have a 20GB ipod on order at the new L.A. store at the Grove and was told it would be there by Saturday.

So you are saying now it is Saturday instead of Thursday?c

Why would this person tell me to my face it is coming out on Thursday when it is not?
I know the original iPod along with some other things came out on Saturdays, but she gave me her word for it. Weird. I might call them tomorrow.

Ok, a little update.
I called the phone store of apple and asked them when it would come out. He said right now the website says 2-3 weeks. I asked him again, what are YOU saying when it ships. He paused and quoted the website again. I told him I had been told at an APPLE retail store it is coming out this Thursday. He paused again, this time quite long and said he is not allowed to disclose any information and I should go talk to the people in the store again. I guess this could be interpreted either way. I'll call the store at the International Plaza again and see what they can tell me.
I would not make such a fuss about if I wasn't leaving for Europe on Thursday. While 3 weeks in Europe visiting my family isn't all that bad I would be a LOT happier with a brand new iPod along. If it really comes out on Thursday I could go buy one before I leave. It it comes out Saturday I will wait until I get back because the ones in Europe gor for quite a bit more.

Does anyone have any news on how long it is taking to ship out the 10 gig iPods?

I just ordered mine I hope I don't have to wait 2-3 weeks....

you have been in angst about getting your ipod prior to this europe trip since they were announced. no amount of wishing will make it happen. you have four options, none of which are truly awful:
1. change your leaving date to next week.
2. have someone send you an ipod (i'm leaving for europe for a month 2 days before Mario Sunshine is being released and am having a friend send it on.)
3. buy the ipod overseas.
4. wait 3 weeks till you get back.

no matter what happens, you survive. i hope that it does arrive for you thursday, but that won't mean it'll happen.

Really though, I won't exactly count on my iPod being there Saturday or Thursday.

It's all a crap shoot.

Hey guys,

I am one of those eagerly awaiting the release of the 20GB iPod and I've already preordered mine through Mac Connection ($494.00). They told me that they're receiving a shipment of 70 20GB iPods today and will start shipping them immediately. Their overnight rates are very good--$11.99 for FedEx Standard Overnight. Not only that, but they don't charge sales tax, so the whole thing ends up costing $505.99 and will be delivered tomorrow to my address at work. I am not only getting it the first day it officially comes out (August 1st), but also for a lot less than buying it from a store in NYC and being charged additional 8.25% in sales taxes. I suggest you call Mac Connecion before ordering, though. Good luck and have fun!!

Well, I'm going to my Apple Store this Saturday to pick up one of those suckers it better be there, I live 20 minutes from the Apple Store in NH where my apple education discount won't be countered by a sales tax. Also I had the same expirience with the people on the phone it will be in 2 weeks, well could you give me a date, 2 weeks, and I'm thinking you got to be kidding me tell me a day. Oh well at least if the iPod isn't there when I am I will harrass the Mac Genius by stumping them many times!

Not to burst your bubble, but don't take promises from mailorder/online dealers too seriously. Just because MacConnection expects a shipment today, does not mean they will receive a shipment today. They, like the rest of the iPod happy people are at the mercy of Apple actually delivering the goods. The same thing happened with the FP iMac (bad flashback).

I hope I'm wrong though.

Just called the Apple Store in Tampa and they said the iPods are in transit. They will be there by Saturday but most likely not tomorrow morning. Too bad... I would have loved to have my entire music library with me on the trip. I am taking my Ti though, so all is well.

So all you people out there wanting an iPod. you can buy one this weekend. Those that ordered one, it should be coming early next week.

On another note: Buy one over there??? Are you insane? The 20 Gb iPods are priced at 649! plus the 16% VAT this comes to something around 720. Because the euro is pretty much on par with the US dollar right now it would mean paying $720 for the same thing that would cost $520 here, including FL sales tax. I want one, but not that bad. I will just have to wait three weeks. Are there any support groups for people like me? Or is that what this board is for?

The nice thing will be coming home on August 24th and stopping at the Apple store to not only pick up a new iPod but also JagWire. Christmas is coming a couple of months early for me it seems. </rant>

Have you heard anything on the Windows iPod units (I'm getting a 10GB one to complement my existing 5GB Mac unit)? I'm going on vacation until the 17th, and I wouldn't mind having my Windows iPod waiting for me when I return.
