New MacBook setup - killer aps?

I have finally upgraded from an ancient Lombard G3 to a Core 2 Duo Macbook. Due to my hardware limitations I haven't kept up much with new software (I was barely running Jaguar so Safari/iTunes et al would not upgrade).

What are some of the current must have programs (beyond the iLife suite) that I should put on my new machine? General purpose use (text editing, page layout, photo editing, internet, etc.) I'm looking for the cool/useful/fun shareware and commercial utilities/games/programs that maximize Tiger.

I've tried digging around and haven't been able to find a lot of buzz about things beyond Parallels, iPhoto.

I think the programs that would be useful for a particular person depend on what that person needs to do.

If you tell us what kind of stuff you use your computer for (maybe what Apps were well-liked on your old computer), someone will be able to tell you what does that well today.

Unfortunately, your "general purpose use" list is still too broad to really give relevant advice. For example, "text editing" could be done in Apple's Text Edit, but it's not very exciting. MS Word has everything that a pro might need (including the kitchen sink), but comes at a price. If you're just doing flyers and cards for printing, something like Print Explosion has a wide variety of templates and graphics, but is not very compatible for sharing with others.

I'd say it all depends on the price, compatibility, ease of use, and feature set that you're looking for.

The new incarnation of Konfabulator is Yahoo Widgets. Still works the same way and runs the same widgets.

One app I've recently rediscovered is FireFox 2.0. It has some nice plug-ins to make web surfing more productive.

A second vote for TextWrangler and Adium, I use them both most days.
