Microsoft makes a U-turn, keeps Hotmail name

Microsoft has made an about-face and decided to keep the Hotmail name for its Web-based e-mail service, rather than Windows Live Mail. more

Windows Live Hotmail - what a joke.

Still, research was conducted, a compromise was reached and I guess the compromising Windows loyalists simply love the name.

Prediction: Microsoft will drop the Hotmail name anyway. Just not now. They are simply putting in an intermediary step into things. Next big update will have them dropping the "Hotmail" portion since by then everyone will be used to the "Windows Live".

I once watched the name of a dairy company change five times over a period of about 6 years.

Zarda
Fairmount-Zarda
Fairmount-Highland
Highland-Roberts
Roberts

The obvious reason, to maintain brand recognition. Don't want to confuse the poor customers. Moo.

Over the past year I have had a block on Hotmail in my e-mail account (not .Mac) . . .

. . . two weeks ago I removed the block . . . and SPAM more than doubled in a few days.

I get a stomach pain and feel nauseous every time I hear the names Hotmail and Microsoft . . .

You are right.

A while back after much effort the amount of SPAM from Hotmail was much reduced. Today it is as it used to be, I block it as well and now only have one contact who only uses Hotmail or should I say that awful mouthful Windows Live Hotmail

Originally, Windows Live Mail was to be a top-to-bottom redesign that would bring the service in line with the interface of Microsofts Outlook e-mail client and Windows Vistas Windows Mail entry-level client. But Microsoft backtracked so it could reinsert a classic look.

i.e. We were so busy getting Vista into a state where a couple users might buy it, that we didn't have time to do this. Also, it would have been hard.

Everybody should just switch to gmail and be done with it. nearly 3gb of storage plus access to all the other google perks. I've been using it for personal for a couple years now and my business uses it too. Plus you can't beat google's spam filter, I don't get any spam.

Uh-uh!

I have Gmail as well. I get SPAM. I use Gmail only as a back-up. I have only sent two pieces of 'g'-mails to friends since I signed up 1.5 years ago. As a matter of fact, I started receiving SPAM with Gmail before I ever used that account.

I get SPAM with Gmail. Gmail is overrated.

I like GMail. I get maybe 1 piece of spam per month.

I ditched Hotmail years ago. I got so much spam there my real email would get lost in the crowd. I only used it because a couple of friends wanted me to use MSN to chat, but I gave it up after only a couple of months. Ugh. I get a bad taste in my mouth whenever I think of hotmail.

Naww. As deft as they are with branding, it'll probably be Microsoft Windows Live Office Hotmail.

Notes from a long time web emailer:

I've kept my Hotmail account for years, because I have so many subscription and business relation accounts tied to it. I switched to GMail for personal mail from its release, after trying Yahoo as well (which I keep for bulletins from a Yahoo group or two, and for the neat free calendar-will-text-your-cell-phone appointment reminders).

By any objective measure Hotmail gets by far the most spam -- in the InBox -- and nothing has changed through all the iterations of the betas in this regard.

The "classic" interface did undergo its first ever real improvement recently to be fair -- and now actually shows the whole address of the sender and the whole subject. Imagine that! And it only took 10 years! They're smokin' up there now... ...but this long overdue improvement has endeared old HM a bit to me, and at least it meets my needs for checking shipping confirmations, etc. -- as long as I remain aware of the caveat below that is....

Hotmail also gets many more false negatives, i.e., despite all my "report and delete" clicking, it can't seem to learn that I'm too dense to want to save 85% on ink cartridges that would void my printer warranty and fade in ten minutes, like the erections all the Viagra offers would bring me, but it DOES tag incoming emails from new subs or invoices, etc. as spam! So I have to manually check my junk mail box daily.

The funniest thing H.Mail does though, is tag certain eMails from Microsoft at the highest warning level with a pink shield indicating the mail may be dangerous and malicious. ROFL!

I do get lots of spam on Gmail -- but it's 99.5% all in the spam filter box -- and out of thousands of messages, maybe I've had one false negative in a year. So basically, I can just forget about checking it.

And G gets smarter every day -- with no fanfare cool new features appear regularly. The search feature is superb, contacts work like they should, the labels are fast, easy to create and apply as is making groups, and sending eMail as if it came from any of your other accounts.

For those who dig in there's really no comparison -- though the threads interface may throw some at first and messages that changed topic without changing subject may be buried where you HAVE to search for 'em.

One last reason for multiple accounts from different email providers: with a tabbed browser I can have my G, Hot and Yahoo mail, i.e all my mail segregated by type and all open at once. If I had three GMail accounts I'd have to run FireFox, Safari and Opera at once to accomplish the same feat and with much window switching.

I get spam on my .mac, gmail & Yahoo accounts. I had to stop using my filters on my .mac account as it placed all of my emails from clients in the junk mail folder. Some days I receive more than 50 pieces of spam email on any & all of my above listed email accounts. My experience with Hotmail is severals years old. Spam seems just to be getting larger. Over 90% of my Yahoo email goes straight to the junk mail folder. gmail is a little better.

To me there is just too much spam. Every email program does better in certain areas. Pick the one or ones that you like & work best for you.

I use gmail as my main addy these days and Yahoo for my board registrations, purchases, etc. Yahoo still gets tons of spam coming through, but I never get ANY spam through my Gmail. The spam folder picks it up 100%. Never have any spam at all getting into my regular inbox. Of course, I don't use it for registering for things, making purchases, etc.

Microsoft's new "Vista Methodology for Product Development": pre-announce and tout the coming upgrade as a revolutionary new product, get halfway through, realize it was over-ambitious and unrealistic, then gut it and release it as a shadow of its original potential, as uncompelling as a wet paper bag, and give it a new name.

My Gmail spam folder currently holds 1400 spam messages. I'm just letting Gmail automatically clean them out after 30 days; I've given up reporting them through SpamCop and deleting them. Very few ever arrive in my Gmail Inbox. My Hotmail account(s) get about 10 a week, with about a 30-70 hit/miss ratio (70% arrive in my Inbox, rather than the Junk folder).
