Too bad I still have to use Firefox to view Web pages Safari can't.

<hr />

-and vice versa. Ever try going to Amazon with Firefox? It tries for hours to load 'g-images', but never works.

I use Firefox almost exclusively, but I probably wouldn't if Apple made the latest version of Safari available for Panther. I love some of the features (tabbed browsing), but Firefox is starting to drive me crazy. The cursor never lines up correctly so I never know what I'm typing.

I want to try another browser, but I'm just about out of patience for trying new things.

Too bad safasri still sucks. Hardly any features, slow, and still incompatible with some sites.
If Apple were smart it would base Safari on Mozilla, like Firefox. I dont know why they stick to this Konqueror crap.
Importing bookmarks is much better and easier on firefox also.

Re: Safari gains browser share, as Firefox dips
When browsers use is checked, is it checked against companies, sites, industry that will only allow IE Windows.

I use 3 browsers.
1. Safari, just about all the time.
2. Firefox, to check some Real Estate.
3. IE Windows, using crossover when I have to do a wide search for property.
The Real Estate Industry (MLS's) have forced us to use IE Windows. That to me isn't a choice and when taking %'s should be placed/mentioned in a separate rating somehow.

If they do, I stand corrected, and this post will self-destruct ...

@Netizen Kane: Hand coding is easy. Dreamweaver is junk that slows it down. If you learn to use PHP or Ruby or Perl or Python just a little bitty bit, you can save a lot of time by not typing the same thing over and over and over. Need something more? Use a CMS. (content management system) Dreamweaver? no way. TextMate!
@steve... Konqueror and Safari are the gold standard of beauty! It's the Ajax capabilities that are lacking slightly. and the buttons need to be more flexible not only Aqua.
Firefox is good, but still also doesn't quite render the ACID2 test right. It's CSS positioning isn't perfect, but better than IE7 overall.
Even IE7 has to get some credit for vast improvements. But still has a ways to go.
Unfortunately, the majority of windows users (consumers and business) haven't upgraded to IE7, so they still can't even see PNG graphics correctly.

As for how they determine browser stats? Easy. Server logs. The header of an HTTP request includes buttloads of information about your computer every time you click on something. A text string that identifies your browser and OS is one part of that. Web servers do keep all this information and analyze it. mainly, they need to know how better to serve their users.
5% may seem small, but it's 5 % of how much? It's a lot. Significant. For specific servers that percentage may be higher or lower.

How about TextMate?

Hand-coding with on the fly web preview.

That's a SWEET app.

Firefox 2 sux! It is unresponsive & sometimes slow.
Heck I'm using Seamonkey Mozilla 1.0.7 because the newer versions are based off of Firefox 2. Sometimes Firefox 2 just freezes up & other times it just crashes.
Incompatibility with websites has got nothing to do with a browser! It is the website author's fault.

Though I do agree with this assessment, my viewing of PDFs is mostly cursory, and sometimes accidental. It is far easier for me to back up my browser than to hunt down a downloaded PDF. If I want the features you have cited above, I would just right-click and download to disk.

Adobe Reader 8 plugin works fine in Safari. So what is Firefox's problem?

<hr />

Good question. You CAN view PDFs in Firefox, but have to use the more-limited Shubert|it plugin instead of Acrobat. It loads more quickly than Acrobat, but drives me nuts because of the limited features.

<hr />

I love that plugin. What limited features?

Adobe plug in? why would you need an adobe reader plug in? Safari shows PDFs just fine for me with no plug ins... it uses preview. If it end up i want to see it out of safari, i just rightlick it while its showing it in safari and hit to look at it in Preview.

with Preview i dont get why anyone would want Acrobat Reader installed on their machine.

I have no problems with Amazon. Can you give me specifics so I can reproduce it? Do you have the latest Firefox?

Firefox also has that really great plug-in system where you can add all kinds of functionality. It's very cool.

But Safari 3 in Leopard looks sweet too. One feature I've always wanted is in Safari 3 - the find results are highlighted really well. How many times have you done a find on a page and you can't even see where the result is?

I also prefer Firefox's vertical pane for bookmarks. I really hate menus for bookmarks.
