Re: Mac 911 Weblog: Stop Entourage background churning
Awesome tip, thanks. I'm going to give it a try. On my Intel Mac, I do notice this issue and it's nasty. Plus I have to rebuild the database from time to time anyway (its flaky).

I wonder...
I am contemplating moving to Entourage from Mail because of new project work I'll be performing and Project Center looks promising, particularly the way it integrates with all of the other Office apps. So I tried the tip now. Word was already open and the Database Manager asked me to close all Office apps. So I now wonder...does this DB affect the background/foreground behavior of Office apps other than Entourage?

I am overjoyed to see this tip - I have been noticing the hang up for a couple of months, and could not figure out the source of it. Way to go!!!!

Re: I wonder...
A couple comments.

This database check hits the Entourage DB in ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2004 Identities/Main Identity, none of the other Office applications appear to be affected.

I tried moving back to Mail from Entourage when the hangs became too much of an impediment to work. Mail may be fine for many users, but it lacks much functionality I need, turning my 2 week experiment into a painful reminder of why I switched away in the first place.

Frankly, because of the lack of email, contact and calendar tools that are at least as stable as, and function as well as Outlook (and I've tried them all for the Mac over the last 90 days), I came > < this close to punting on the Mac and going back to Dell.

I've been running with the background check turned off for about a month now. Since then I've had none of the hangs, I've seen no ill effects with other Office applications, and my weekely database checks have turned up no errors. As such, my return to the dark side is again on hold.

Thank you so much for this tip! This FINALLY made Entourage usable on our Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro again!

I am sure it's a great tip for Office 2004 for mac. I do so wish that people who write articles should be more specific as this does nothing for Office X.x, an older version.

Re: Mac 911 Weblog: Stop Entourage background churning
Although I don't use Entourage, the database had entries from when i first installed it. I often see my PPC processor rev up to 100%. When I check out iPulse to see what's going on, it indicates that system processes are running hot, though it doesn't list the active system processes. Would a background process such as this show as system?

For whatever reason, the option key procedure did not work, Entourage started everytime. I finally dug into the Office folder (yes, it's 2004), opened Database Utility and went through the options until I reached the last one. Typical of microsoft software, there is no need for another window to open for a single function with two options, Yes or No. This is why I have stuck with Apple's Mail & iCal, less feature bloat and a more intuitive design. Having better integration and features would be nice, even though this is my home 'puter. Entourage does seem to have the basics of Outlook with better concepts on integration. Other office apps likely access this database which is why db manager/utility needs them shut down. Now if I can get this database of 350 mb to slim down.. first I have to find it again...

Re: Mac 911 Weblog: Stop Entourage background churning
<quote>Contrary to Microsoft's suggested fix, I have Spotlight enabled for Entourage."</quote>

Users confuse how Spotlight searches your Entourage database. When Spotlight is turned on within Entourage, a series of files for indexing is created here: ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Microsoft/Entourage/

You should add ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2004 Identities to your Spotlight Exclude list in the System PrefPanes as this will cause slow downs. It could be that Spotlight it trying to index you database and inducing this general slowdown. Entourage has a different mechanism to provide Spotlight information for e-mails and contacts so you don't loose this functionality by excluding the database.

More info on using Entourage with Spotlight can be found here:

Re: Mac 911 Weblog: Stop Entourage background churning
I became very nervous with Entourage after I got signals that the database (3gb) was becoming dodgy. After much soul searching I moved over to Mail and am much happier. Easier to do backups, works so well with Address Book and there are many alternatives ways of handling the other functions found in Entourage.

Read this recently too: "Apple's Mail client handles emails as files; if a file corrupts, it affects one email, not the entire mail store. Having email in discrete files can also make searches and other operations faster because there is less overhead"
