Entourage hangs/pauses solved?

If you're having problems with regular hangs/pauses in Entourage; hangs that tie up the application with periods of heavy disk activity, try turning off the background database check.

Launch Enrourage while holding down the Option key; Database Manager is launched instead.

Click Set Database Prefrences.

Uncheck background integrity checks.

I've been running like this for 2 weeks now with no hangs/pauses; contrasted with 2-3X/day in the past (4GB database). Contrary to Microsoft's suggested fix, I have Spotlight enabled for Entourage.

Since the background check is disabled, it is probably a good idea to run that every now and then.

Larry:

Brilliant! This has been literally torturing me for months as both of the owners of our company have been complaining about this and I've not be able to find a cause or solution.

You're making me look good! Thank you!

Re: Entourage hangs/pauses solved?
I can't tell you how many times I've Force Quit Entourage as it seems to lock up. Background checks seemed like a good thing at the time, but I didn't equate them with the problem. Thanks not only for an explanation, but a solution.

Re: Entourage hangs/pauses solved?
I guess that only works on the latest version of Entourage, correct? I tried it and the only options I'm given are to perform 'typical rebuild' or 'advance rebuild' of the database. Did I miss something?

TIA for your input!

Yes, this is for Entourage 2004 only.

Re: Entourage hangs/pauses solved?
Thanks for the tip on getting rid of the background check. It seems to help a little, but it still hangs for an unacceptably long time (30 seconds+) when I switch between mailboxes (the general Inbox and a folder for Business correspondence - total database is 3 gigs). I've just installed this after using Entourage X with no problem, and I am really frustrated. I'm a running an iBook 600, dual usb, OSX 3.9, 640 ram, 60 gig HD, 12 gigs free, and I think it should easily be able to handle this. I've compacted the database, repaired permissions, and run diskwarrior. Still a long hang time when switching between folders, although otherwise it runs just fine.

One thing I might have done: after I updated from X to 2004, I trashed the old Identity folder from X. It looked like 2004 had kept around the X database and cache, but I ditched them once entourage seemed to be working. Now, I notice, 2004 does not have a database cache, and I believe that X did. Any insights?

I've done the fix suggested but am still getting the "entourage pause" (that does not refresh.)

how/where would i enable spotlight for entourage. i just looked at my systems preferences and didn't have a check box for entourage, only for all "applications"
