Analysts not concerned by Leopard delay

While Mac users have expressed disappointment and frustration that Leopard's ship date has slipped to October, analysts say it's the right move for Apple if it allows the company to ship the high-profile iPhone on time. more

Re: Analysts not concerned by Leopard delay
I'm not so disappointed that Leopard is delayed as I am that consumer level computer products are not being upgraded. As far as I can remember there has been only one computer product announced since November - MacPro - which is not a mainstream product (and neither is airport extreme). While MacTV is cute and I'm sure iPhone will be also, where are the computer products (Mini, MacBook, Displays, iWork, etc.) one or more of which would normally have been announced at MacWorld?
My anticipation is exhausted! The Apple focus seems to have left, at least in large part, computing.

Apple and Mac users took every opportunity to bash Microsoft for the Vista delays. Now Apple goes and delays Mac OS 10.5.

There's a subtle difference between four months and four years. See if you can work it out.

Re: Analysts not concerned by Leopard delay
So a 4 year delay and cutting of features is equal to a 4 month delay with no feature loss but improved quality?

If Apple were as big as MS, Apple would have already delivered Leopard and iPhone, lauched iSatellite and and created the satellite link with the iphone, iTunes, AppleTV, and Mars.

What's next, Apple's gonna start dropping technologies from the release just to get it out on time...er, I mean get it it out late.

Re: Analysts not concerned by Leopard delay
It's not about the 4 month delay. It's the fact Apple already denied the September delay rumor a few weeks back and now putting more resources on the iPhone project. And don't forget all the keynote jokes against Microsoft's Vista delays. I will buy the iPhone, but it shouldn't be at the expense of a Mac or an operating system.

Wow! The snowflake is the same as an avalanche argument.
A grain of sand is the same thing as a desert!
4 months equals 4 years!

Vista was delayed for something like 5 years. For Apple it is more important that Leopard be really tight when they release it. Leopard can't afford to be a buggy mess like Vista. Microsoft had to release Vista and they threw out a lot of features to make it happen. For Apple a prompt release isn't as important as how clean the release is.

Still, I'm disappointed that Apple put their phone ahead of the heart and soul of Apple, OSX. I'm not as sure of the Apple phone as Apple is. It just better be really good. I don't want to be running Windows next year.

The iPhone use OSX. So the iPhone is part of the Apple soul as you put it.

Oh, come now. XP came out 6 years ago. I don't think they were ever planning to release Vista one year after XP. I don't recall the exact original release date, but I'm pretty sure it was no more than 3 years ago. Deplorable, sure, but let's not go overboard.

That said, this sucks. Like others said, it's not so much the few month wait but the impression that flashy gadgets are getting all the attention at the expense of everyday computing. Not to mention all the new versions of software I've been looking forward to that are tied to Leopard, like XCode and iWork.

Leopard contains *needed* fixes for Tiger
One of those fixes is Bluetooth A2DP support for the on-board Bluetooth hardware, which will finally allow Apple to support the use of wireless Bluetooth stereo headphones. We have mice, keyboards, cell phone, PDA support via Bluetooth, but not advanced Bluetooth protocols such as A2DP.

Support for A2DP is available from most (every?) manufacturer's Bluetooth USB "dongle" that can be used under OS X, so it is simply inexplicable why Apple doesn't provide the same support for its own built-in hardware. Apple updates other drivers "in the field", so why not Bluetooth?

There are other driver and operating system fixes that can be "backported" to Tiger, and should have been "backported" long ago -- and I say this as someone who has been writing/modifying device drivers and embedded code for various Unix, BSD, and Linux variants for over 20 years.

Come on, Apple. I don't need multiple virtual desktops, and I can buy my own virtualization tools (Parallels, for one). What I do need is fixes for device drivers, file systems, and networking protocols to allow me to continue to use my MacBook PRO with existing off-the-shelf 3rd party Bluetooth hardware until I can install Leopard later this year... in which you have promised A2DP.
