Re: Adobe to FreeHand users: Migrate to Illustrator CS3
In its early to mid days Freehand was excellent!

Unfortunately, Freehand died long ago as it hit MX -- this version was buggy, slow and crash prone and the postscript it generated began to denegrate. At that point I switched to illustrator after years of being an ardent Freehand supporter. Initially I hated Illustrator, but looking back I wish I would have ditched Freehand long before MX -- Illustrator is a superior tool with exceptional postscript.

Long live Illustrator. I said my goodbyes to Freehand long ago.

Re: Adobe to FreeHand users: Migrate to Illustrato
I'm hoping that they sell it (and eventually GoLive) to someone so they can at least pretend they still have some competition

Freehand Users to Adobe: Build better tools!

Illustrator doesn't cut it. ID has potential, but Freehand was the best tool.

Adobe should be stepping up to offer a seamless and trouble free import filter for Freehand files to get them into Illustrator. That is always our headache.

One hopes they will integrate some Freehand features into AI. Hope springs eternal.

Here, here! I couldn't agree more. I've used both programs since FreeHand v2 and Illustrator 88. Those were the days. I always preferred FH up to v10. MX just got weird and less intuitive. It took too many clicks to do things that used to be simple - like apply color to fills and strokes. The new pallets tried to consolidate too much stuff.
Being in prepress, I've always had to keep up with Illustrator - some versions were very buggy, but I did get to like CS2 and so far I like CS3... but I still miss the comfortable feeling of Freehand 5.5 through 10.

We will miss you, FreeHand!

Feels like reading the obituary of an old friend. It's not a happy day when there is less great software in the world.

I now use Illustrator because my employer uses it, but the program frustrates me every time I open a file. Illustrator is definitely powerful, but it is also confusing, non-intuitive, and cumbersome to use. The ONLY thing that Illustrator does better is open other postscript files and it integrates better with (no big surprise) other Adobe programs. I'll never understand why Illustrator caught on better than FH. Damn shame.

Freehand, you will be sorely missed. Curse you Adobe.

It all depends on what you learned first. I learned Illustrator first and find it very intuitive, and occasionally using Freehand, I found Freehand to be confusing and unintuitive. Learning one program, then switching to the other, is always going to create confusion trying to find that tool that you were used to, and it's now in another menu or palette.

I remember the Pagemaker stalwarts that refused to switch to InDesign. Where are they now? Using InDesign and not looking back. You can either take Adobe's offer, or keeping using Freehand until Apple doesn't support Rosetta anymore.

Re: Adobe to FreeHand users: Migrate to Illustrator CS3
My condolences to all you long-time FreeHand users out there. Switching to another program can be a bit of a drag, but it's not the end of the world. Illustrator isn't a dog... it's a very mature, extremely capable drawing/layout program that happens to work differently than what you're used to. And the fact is: if the majority of users had preferred FreeHand, it would be Illustrator getting the axe. Things change.

The future of GoLive
Adobe's GoLive product page says: "In November, 2006, Adobe announced that Adobe Dreamweaver, the industry leader in web design and development, would be integrated into Adobe Creative Suite 3, and that the next version of Adobe GoLive would be available as a standalone product. We expect to make this new version, Adobe GoLive 9, available in late Summer 2007 in English, French, German, and Japanese."

Personally, I don't understand why Adobe would bother to release another new version later this year if they intend to kill the program. That makes no sense.

Some months ago, Bruce Chizen said that GoLive would be turned into a web authoring program for designers, which would be fabulous. Dreamweaver has always been a very designer-unfriendly program. Time will tell...

I was on the GoLive 9.0 beta. I'm using the finished version now. It does exist!! Don't know anything about distrib plans, though.

I've had similar experience and have always preferred AI to FH.
