odd characters = disappearing files

i just trasfered some files to my mac from a PC with file names that contained non-american characters (french) and they showed up fine until i selected them at which point they would simply disappear from the finder. what can i do to view these files again and i suppose edit the file names so that OS X can understand.

ok maybe i should reword the question: how does os x handle fonts from other languages in file names?

I use filenames in several languages including Russian and Chinese without any problems. It may well be a "translation" problem from Windows' characters to Mac's character palette.
