Help!! Airport Extreme Can't find the internet...

So I'm not great with computers, but I'm going to try to make this as detailed as I can.

I have this Linksys Wireless Router-- a Airplus XTreme G. I plug things into it, it's fine, and it's fine with both my MacBook Pro and my parent's PC. But I want to print wirelessly. So I bought the Airport Extreme Base Station.

The man at the Mac store said that all I had to do was unplug my other station completely, plug in the Airport extreme, connect that to the internet using the cable that I used to connect the OTHER router to the internet (in that WAN slot, I don't even know what WAN stands for), install the software and I'd be off and rolling.

But here's the problem- I did all of those things, and the base station keeps flashing amber and saying that it can't find the internet connection. It's a FiOS connection, but it works fine with the Linksys router (I plugged the old thing back in so that I could figure out what was wrong). I thought that maybe FiOS wasn't compatible, but how could that be? I can't possibly need to reset the thing, it's brand new, right???

PLEASE help. I'm such a computer illiterate. That's why I love my Mac, usually, even a dummy like me can make it work. Not in this case, however.

I would try to power cycle the modem and router.

Disconnect everything.

Pull the plug out of the cable modem and let it sit without power for a few minutes. In case your not sure, the modem is the thing you plugged into the WAN port on your router. Next, plug the power in and wait until it is 'ready' typically when all the lights on the front stop flashing. Next, connect the cable plug from the modem to the WAN port on the Airport. Then power up your new Airpor Extreme.

What this does is reset the connection between the modem and the router and allows the modem to associate itself with the new router.

Good Luck

Hmm,

Now that you have tried the easy stuff, it is time to call on the forum masters to offer more advice. I am starting to think that the Airport may be bad out of the box.

My only experience with this problem was a first generation airport base station that intermittantly lost its connection to the internet and needed to be rebooted frequently. Eventually it failed completely and I had to replace it.

Keep us posted.

Did the old router come for free when you got the FiOS? I've read they give away a router with special firmware to help diagnose connection issues (it can be remotely controlled). For all I know, Verizon may specifically require that router.

Something to keep in mind is that if the Airport Extreme works behind the old router, there's nothing wrong with that configuration. You'll have to routers, but other than using more electricity, you'll get exactly what you were looking for.

I'd also turn off the wireless in the old router, but otherwise, if it works, go with it.

Well, that's not such a weird explanation unless you were told to turn on PPPoE in both the router and your Mac. I don't know what they told you to reconfigure in your Mac.
