Re: Apple's Mac market share on the rise
What's up with these numbers?

Is it just because it's a slow quarter and the other guys aren't selling so well?

Have I been sleeping?

How long has Apple pulled into double-digit market share numbers?!

I believe this in laptops ONLY; vs "installed base/platforms".

Well, "Market Share" has never included the installed base. If both laptop and desktop sales are in double digits, it seems to me total Mac Market Share would be in double digits. However, I recall reading recently that Apple's Market Share was still in single digits.

I'm confused

Apple will never see significant desktop share acceleration until they put out a mid-range tower similar to a down-sized Mac Pro. The iMacs are too hard to expand and upgrade and the Mac Pros are too big and too expensive.

I think a mid-range tower from Apple would sell like gangbusters.

The article doesn't say, but last time I saw similar numbers it was for "United States retail laptop market share". That excludes all of Dell, as well as the rest of the planet.

Amen to that, brother. Why can't we get a decent small tower with a few PCIe slots and a single, dual core chip. That would be awesome and sell like crazy... It can run Windows, too.

Granted, I am at the high-end and have a MacPro quad 3 Ghz, but I am not an average consumer. The Mac Mini is cool, but limited.

You mean LED-illuminated screen. The screens are already LCD.

Re: Apple's Mac market share on the rise
Another "amen" here, but for a different reason. There are guys like me out here, too: Enthusiasts whose days of owning the high-end stuff are over for awhile. I can't justify dropping a couple grand on a MacBook Pro, but I could justify and afford a $1000 machine every couple of years and could keep it fresh by upgrading the RAM, HD and video card. I don't want a computer with a flat panel attached ($$), I don't want an outdated completely un-expandable low-end play machine (mini) or a $2500+ pro box, and I don't need a notebook!!!

So, what am I using instead? A 5-year old used dual-G4. Come on Apple, build me a $999 mini-tower like the old G4 and I'll start buying again like the enthusiast I am.

Hence the word retail. Dell doesn't sell in stores.

It seems that I heard that Wal-Mart was starting to carry Dells. That would change things if you are correct.

This article mentioned that these are the US sales. The 3-4% numbers seems to be worldwide sales numbers.

It would be nice to see the top ten. In that way we would know how Dell is being handled.

Apple needs a Mini-tower!
I think there are a lot of us out there that would do a mid-range tower. I've got an early G4 mini-tower myself (AGP 400Mhz). I've added RAM, a display card, additional drives, a DVD-R drive, a processor upgrade card (1.2Ghz) and a USB card reader bay over time (phew!). And just recently I bought an LCD display to replace my failing CRT ==> The choice was either buy a new iMac for $1300 (with little for upgrade options) or buy a new 20" LCD display for $200.

On second thought- maybe that's why Apple doesn't want to offer a machine like that since I haven't had to buy a new machine in 7-8 years!

Heck, I'd even go for the Cube if they brought it back. It doesn't have to be a mini-tower, just as long as I've got a few options for upgrading it.
