I downloaded the new verson of itunes 7.3 and the program will not open. I'm running a iMac G5 PowerPC (20")... I have the 10.4.10 OS. I've downloaded a combo update, restarted my computer, trashed & re-downloaded itunes several times, but it will not open??? I have also run disk utility and everything seems to be in check. <!--color--> Can anyone help me out!?!
If you haven't done so already, I would suggest going tho the Accounts pane of System Preferences and creating a new user. Log in as that user and see if iTunes will launch from there. The results of this would help to narrow down at just what level of the OS that the problem resides.
Since iTunes opened in the new user's account, that let's us know that the problem most likely lies somewhere in your user account, possibly an iTunes preference file in your ~/Library/Preferences folder.
First off though, can you more specifically describe what you mean when you say that iTunes won't open. Are you clicking on the iTunes icon in the Dock? Are you clicking on the iTunes icon in the /Applications directory? When you do click on the icon, what does happen (does the doc icon bounce, is there an alert of some kind)? When you state that you downloaded iTunes 7.3, did you do that through Apple Software Update, or did yo download it from the Apple Web site.
I was having the same problem. I searched the Apple support site and found one person had offered up the following advice: Set Shapeshifter to the default OS X theme, logout, login, start iTunes. For me, problem solved. I was then able to set a modified theme once again without 'breaking' iTunes.
So, if you've been using Shapeshifter this might help. If not, sorry, but I am of no help.
Actually with shapeshifter I found that all you have to do is reset the aqua theme and viola. No need to log out and back in for me. Thanks for the tip though!
I am having a similar problem, except that itunes, safari, ichat, Apple Mail, and widgets all wont open. I also can't get access to shapeshifter in system prefs! I think it may be a virus, but I'm not sure. I really need help!
My iTunes stopped working about a week after I received my new iMac computer (and of course they release a new one now, a whole 6 weeks after I bought mine, and 2 days after I got mine they had the free iPod deal, but that's another story...) and I have tried redownloading iTunes, downloaded all the upgrades for iTunes and OS X, rebooted I don't know how many times and I do not have shapeshifter or whatever it's called. How do I fix it???

Not sure what you mean about iTunes not working. Do you mean it won't launch or just certain features like the videos won't play? More info would help. The fix at this end for NO trailer videos w/in iTunes and also Apple's web site video ads was placing QT app and prefs in the trash and download and reinstall QT v7.2.
iTunes will open, and sometimes will actually show me the front page of the store, then the wheel just keeps turning. I always end up having to force quit. Somehow, yesterday, though, I finally did get access to my music, so maybe it's just worked itself out, I hope!!
I am having the same problem. I created a new account, and iTunes opens. In the original account, when I click on the icon, iTunes opens, I see the library, and within 30 seconds the spinning disc appears. The only way to get out is to do a hard shutdown. I downloaded the iTunes upgrade originally as an automatic updated. Subsequently, I downloaded the updated from Apple.com. Any suggestions as to how to get iTunes to work in the original account?

Even if you have to do a reinstall of iTunes or even the Mac OS, you should not lose your purchased music. The downloaded music files are on the drive in the iTunes Music folder in the iTunes folder in the Music folder under your user ID. If you copy that folder to a CD or DVD or another hard drive, then you can always copy it back after a reinstall if you loss the music during the reinstall. In theory, an archive and install of the Mac OS should save it anyway. Then you just import that folder back into iTunes and if needed, reauthorize your computer with the iTunes Store.
FYI, this is how you can copy that purchased content to another computer and use it on another computer. You can have iTunes Store content authorized on up to 5 computers.
