So, for $100 extra, you get 20GB extra HD space and the ability to run a specific multiplayer game? Does this mean that different consoles will play different games now? That seems unwise if true.

It's still not worth anything at that price. And early adopters must be kicking themselves.

No, it simple a bundle game with the more expensive unit. It only describing the feature of the game.

What about as a blu-ray player. It the least expensive blu-ray player on the market + you get a game machine as a bonus. And remember that you get 5 free blu-ray movies.

It's worth every penny. I'm an early adopter at $599 and I'm not sorry about it at all. I've been enjoying Blu-ray movies in my home theater with it and I'm very happy with the performance. It cost me nearly $300 less than any other Blu-ray player available at the time of purchase.

I consider it a bargain Blu-ray player with a great game system included for free.

I paid $1200 for the first JVC S-VHS deck when it arrived in the late 80s. Considering the mileage I'll get out of the PS3, and what new video technology cost me in the past, it's a steal.

Nope, it's a superb Blu-ray player which now upconverts my SD DVDs via the latest firmware upgrade. Sony has already shown their commitment to upgrading the product with the firmware upgrades and that is comforting. Once the software catches up it will be a great gaming platform as well, it has a very high ceiling.

While I love the Wii, it's pretty much maxed out technologically already by the titles. It is a load of fun though and a great score for Nintendo. To me the Wii is like a Mini Cooper, the PS3 is an Aston Martin DBS.

Not the most expensive ever...
"The PlayStation 3s price, the highest ever for a games console,"

The 3DO console launched at $700. And the Neo Geo was in the same ballpark, if not more than that, if I recall correctly.

This is cool news. If you want HDMI and an HD movie-playing platform, the PS3 is now $180 less than a 360 (Elite) + HD-DVD add-on. Plus, the PS3 is currently including 5 free Blu-Ray movies in a current promo. Then there's the whole quality issue with the 360.... It'll be interesting if MS responds to this. They appear to be losing momentum.

Add me the choir of the happy. I bought the PS3 and a high-def DLP projector on the same day, as a happy pair...and the results blow me away every time I boot it up.

I'm almost done watching the Planet Earth series on blu-ray, and it still makes me giddy seeing it all on a 100+ inch screen in my relatively small apartment, yet still nice and sharp.

This may sound silly, but I also got quite a bit of enjoyment out of blast factor. That is a great finesse game.

Don't you love journalists who have no concept at all of inflation? It seems to be a common weakness with reporters.

The Intellivision console was $299.99 in 1980, which is $800.61 in 2006 dollars. I had one! It kicked Atari's ass!
The 3DO console was $699.95 in 1993, which is $970.30 in 2006.
The Atari 2600 was $199.99 in 1979, which is $596.96 in 2006.

Actually that's not so anymore. You can buy the Sony Blu-Ray Player for $488 at Walmart. You can also buy the competing HDDVD for $299 these days. HDDVD is expected to come out on top in the long run...

I wouldn't mind picking up the new 80GB model though, because motostorm is a game I would buy and seeing how it is $60, this makes the 80GB model a decent value compared to the 60GB version.

Many PS3 fans say this and it's true. If you just wanted a Blu-ray machine you get an incredible game system for free.

The opposite statement is also true. If you just wanted a game machine you get this expensive ball and chain that you didn't ask for.

The game machine needs to be able to stand up on its on own value without the benefit of the bundle. If they threw in a great $3,000 golf club set and sold the bundle for $1,000 this does me no good.

What I wonder is where the 30GB model is. I remember that it was supposed to ship, and cost $499. Have they simply given up on that endeavor? Will the 30GB model materialize for $399?

I've seen Playstation 3s and they seem like a nice system, good video player, internet browser (in a pinch, it works fine with a good hdtv) and great capability for games, but I don't think we've seen the peak of PS3 games yet.

Here's that same point made with pictures: http://curmudgeongamer.com/2006/05/history-of-console-prices-or-500-aint.html

Yes, I'm another happy PS3 owner. So what if the price dropped $100, I've already gotten $100 worth of use out of mine.

Re: Sony cuts price of 60GB PlayStation 3
Yea, but you can say that for just about anything.

In 1979 I purchased a Commodore Pet computer for $999.00 Measuring Worth shows a 2006 price of $2775.23

Oh man... I just released that is within 200 bucks of my simi-new 24 inch iMac. Man I miss the days of Hunt the Whomps.
