HELP! My Canon printer won't work w/ OSX 10.4!!!

A few months ago, I bought a Canon PIXMA 6700D to use w/ my MacMini, which was running 10.3.9 at the time, and it worked fine. However, when I upgraded to 10.4.10, the printer would not work. I re-installed the latest driver from Canon and the printer can be seen in Printer Setup Utility, but when I try to select a driver, I get an error. Any thoughts, help, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Did you try deleting the printer driver and re-installing it? Files can be corrupted during the downloading process, so when you have issues with downloading updated drivers it is often a good idea to first pitch the one you have and try downloading again. If that fails, document and report the exact error message so as to provide people here with better information.

Re: HELP! My Canon printer won't work w/ OSX 10.4!
I actually meant did you delete the new driver and try re-installing that. When you stated that you had installed the latest drivers, it seemed as if you had acquired new drivers from Canon online. The fact that your Mac mini does recognize the printer by brand and model indicates to me that you should be able to print. I checked the Canon site and there are no drivers available online for downloading for the Pixma iP6700D, so the OS X drivers that came with the printer should work with OS X 10.4.x; the printer is specd to work with 10.2.8 or later. Given that your printer is a relatively new model, it makes sense that no driver updates would yet be available.

The GIMP drivers you see are the default UNIX drivers pre-installed with OS X permitting you to use just about any printer. Typically drivers for the same printer family will work; in your case any Pixma iP6xxx GIMP driver should work if it is present. Those generic drivers simply permit you to print and do not provide you with the full feature set of the OEM drivers. For instance, for the few weeks that I used my old Epson Stylus Color 860 on my, then, new Power Mac G5 had to use the GIMP driver for that printer as Epson did not provide an OS X printer driver for the SC860. The SC860 was sold in 2000 and discontinued later that same year when the SC880 was introduced. The Pixma iP6700D should not require you having to resort to using GIMP drivers.

I am not familiar with the error you received, but now that you have provided the exact message anyone familiar with your situation can better approach your problem.

I had the same problem, it has to do with 10.4.10 overlaying your gimp-print. I ended up uninstalling gimp-print and re-installed an older version of CUPS. This explains it fairly well
