Help with syncing from iPhone to my Macbook??

Hello all,

So naturally i have an iPhone and i just purchased a macbook a couple weeks ago. And i'm trying to sync up with my iPhone. It automatically detected the phone and i proceeded to sync. I was able to sync my contacts with no problem and opened up my address book on the MB and all the contacts were there. The problem comes in when i try to sync music and photos from my iPhone onto the MB...

When i click on photos, there isn't an option to select pictures from "iPhone" to sync over to iPhoto. It's like i can only do the opposite, sync photos from iPhoto onto my iPhone. Does anyone know about this?

In regards to my music/music video & a movie i downloaded from iTunes, the music is on my iPhone, so is there anyway to sync the music from my iPhone to my MB on the iTunes? My music, etc... i'm referring to is in my iTunes on my PC that i have, so what can i do, if anything, to get everything from the iTunes on my PC onto my MB? If anyone has any feedback or solutions, please let me know.

Thanks,

DL

I don't believe that you can sync photos from the iPhone to the Mac, but others might offer more on that.

As to the music/videos, if you copy music and video files from the Windoze PeeCee (either by copying to CD, DVD or external drive or by network) to the Mac and then Add them to the iTunes library on the Mac and authorize the Mac (you can have up to 5 computers authorized for iTunes Store content), then you should be able to sync them with the iPhone. Again, I don't believe that there is a default way to sync songs or videos from the iPhone to the Mac. You cannot with an iPod, although there are alternative methods (various software utilities or mount the iPod as a drive in the Mac OS and then making the music folder visable and doing a typical copy in the Finder) for the iPod. I don't know if any of those alternative methods work for an iPhone or not.

Syncing occurs one way in regards to iPhoto in the way you are referring to. To get photos from iPhone to your MacBook, you will rely on iPhoto. When you plug it in, iPhoto should notice the new pictures located on the phone and offer to import them for you. If you haven't taken any pictures with the iPhone, then iPhoto will not open. At least that's my experience. Mine deletes on import (by choice), so the subsequent "sync" will put those new pictures back on the iPhone.

Re: getting your music from one PC to Mac, just copy them over any way you wish. drag them all on to a DVD and burn... put DVD in Mac and copy all into iTunes. I don't know how it would work trying to use the iPhone as a medium of exchange.

On my home systems, I have a PC box that acts as my backup repository and is seen as a network drive. I just drag songs for archive over to it. That way, I can keep all my favorite songs on my PowerBook. If I ever change and like a song that I didn't keep on my PowerBook, I can just drag it back over to the PowerBook. This way, I keep a paltry 5-6GB song library of all my 4 & 5 star songs, and my entire 70GB music library is on the archive PC. Mostly made up of pre-iTunes era songs from CDs.

Manually, yes. Open iPhoto, see your iPhone listed in the left hand column as if it were a camera that was connected, and click on it. That should bring up the import screen, telling you how many photos are on it, and would you like to import.

If it is not automatically opening, I would think that is a setting in the preference pane. I don't have my Powerbook in front of me now to clarify that or not. I'll check when I go home for lunch and report back here if someone else hasn't already.

If neither of these works, there is something gone awry, and not the norm.

Well, for the life of me, I can't find that setting anywhere in my iPhoto. I must have dreamed the whole thing up. Also MIA is the older Image Capture. Sorry. There has to be a setting somewhere tucked away in a plist or something. Maybe someone else could find it?

Glad to hear you solved the other issues! Have you gone into the settings of your iPhone syncing? i.e. click on the phone in the devices list, and click on the Video tab. From there, you choose how much and what type (TV or Movie) of video you want to sync.

The setting is in Image Capture, in the general preferences. Set it to "when a camera is connected, open NO applications", if you want to disable iPhoto opening whenever the iPhone (or some other camera device) is attached.

feefer, where is Image Capture located now? I could spotlite it, but not at my Mac right now. I checked the user/applications/utilities folder but it is not present there on my system.

Maybe I deleted it in one of those moments. You know... when you hit a keyboard combo my mistake, and you know you did something, but can't figure out what?
