Re: changing default e-mail
You might need to be a little clearer on what you want to do...

Do you want to use the Mail application to access your Penn State email account rather than say an Internet web page access?

Or do you want your Penn State email address to forward to a .Mac email account/address (i.e. some sends a email to you at name@psu.edu and it automatically gets forwarded onto you at name@mac.com)?

if it is possible, i would like to receive my penn state e-mail via the apple service... so if they sent it to name@psu.edu it would get forwarded to me at name@mac.com
I would also, which i doubt is possible, send mail through the apple service, from the e-mail address name@psu.edu thanks so much for responding

For that type of thing, you will most likely need to check with the Penn State folks on how to forward your email to another email address. I am able to do it with my Alumni account with University of Michigan, but it something done within the U of M email/computer system.

The only way that I can think to do it other than through something the Penn State has setup is to have a computer at home setup that is ALWAYS on and ALWAYS receiving your Penn State email and then you setup a filter/rule in your email client to forward ALL email from that account to another account. But, that is potentially a waste...

As to sending email through the Apple service from the Penn State address, again is kind of depends on what you mean and what way you access email (i.e. email client). If you are talking about actually still sending an email from the Apple account but your want it to appear as if it came from the Penn State account, then that can potentially easily be done depending on what email client you use.

If you are talking about sending a Penn State account message through someone else's outgoing server (SMTP server), then that can just be a matter of settings in your email client.

What do you use to view your email? The Mail application in Mac OS X? A web browser? Something else?

Re: changing default e-mail
Is this what you're looking for? (edit: sorry - I saw your reply just after posting this!)

http://kb.its.psu.edu/psu-all/hd/macmailset

Mac Mail Settings for Penn State

1. Click on the Mail icon on the Mac tool bar/dock OR go to Application and select Mail.
2.
* Full name
* Email Address
* Incoming Mail Server (email.psu.edu)
* Account Type (POP)
* User Name (PSU user ID)
* Password
* Outgoing Mail Server (smtp.psu.edu)
3. Click OK.
4. Next, the Mail program will ask your keychain password. Please type in the same password as you use for the Penn State Access Account user ID. Note: If a pop-up window shows up and says that your password is invalid, please click Continue or Cancel several times until you get the Import Mailboxes message.

5. The Import Mailboxes message will ask: would you like to import mailboxes from another email client? Please click No.
6. You will then open a full-screen Mail program
7. When you are in this Mail program, please click Mail option on the top
8. Then click Preferences -> click Account -> click Account Information
9. (Make sure that you type in the right UserID and the Password. Please also check if SMTP is smtp.psu.edu)
10. Go to Advanced tab -> CHECK the box of SSL incoming server security authenticate (you will see that the number changes to 995)
11. Click OK to finish the setting
12. Check mail now
13. The system may request your password again. So type in your password and Check Remember my password to the keychain
14. Now you should be ready to use Macs Mail program.
15. Finally, we would like to remind you that if you are using the PSU Mac's Mail program, you probably can not connect to the network home directories, since we do not currently provide it. We recommend using PSU Webmail or Eudora instead.

okay... i finally figured it out... thank you so much everyone. One more question though, how do you import the folders and previous messages from my psu address? is there a way to do that?

<hr />

If you have created folders within the webmail interface, then I am not sure if you can download those folders to the Mail email client. About the only thing that I could think to try is log into your email account using the webmail interface and then to move all the messages in folders into the mail Inbox. That should then allow you to "download" all those messages to the Mail email client. Once you have them in the Inbox in the Mail email client on your Mac, you can then create folders (or smart folders) in the Mail client and move those messages to the folders to store.

Re: changing default e-mail
You have the correct password entered into the incoming email server setting in the Apple Mail preferences, right?
