A hacked iPhone and alternate SIM will not have the functionality of the "official" service by a long shot.

Re: iPhone coming to the UK November 9
Why should we buy it?

Pay 100 EURO more and no 3G with HSDPA?

Please...

The only thing I'm missing is the visual voicemail. While it's a nice feature, I wouldn't say not having it is a "long shot" from the "official" service. Of course, I'll need to hold off on firmware updates until someone else is the guinea pig and makes sure it doesn't re-lock the phone, which is a hassle. That said, until Apple releases the phone in Italy, it's a viable option to take the UK (or US version) and unlock it.

Re: iPhone coming to the UK November 9
When are they introducing the iPhone in the rest of Europe? Like Sweden?

Re: iPhone coming to the UK November 9
Rumours in Norway are that Apple are in negotiation with our two biggest phone companies, so I imagine the same is happening in Sweden. We would probably all get the iPhone more quickly if there was one big pan-European company, but since Apple has to do individual negotiations in small countries, I wouldn't count on it coming until 2008. I wonder if by them there will be an iPhone 2.0 out.

Had Apple launched a 3G iPhone in Europe, you would have seen a hissy-fit in the U.S. of early adopters that would dwarf the upset that occurred when they dropped the price by $200.00.....................

What are you talking about? It seems obvious Apple is readying a new iPhone for the US at this time; probably ready for MacWorld. I am an iPhone owner from the first day, and I'm waiting in great anticipation for a 3G iPhone. I was hoping I would be able to get one today.

"Jobs discussed 3G during the press event event, but said he believes Apple has a superior solution."

Is he saying that EDGE is superior to 3G? Doesn't make any sense.

Consider speed, battery life, and availability. If I had a phone with 4G, would you rush out and buy one?

Re: iPhone coming to the UK November 9
Jobs has already talked about the Edge decision. He said on a balance Apple's use of Wi-Fi and the Edge network is the superior solution for now. Edge provides a slower, but more readily network, where as Wi-Fi provides access to a faster network. He also has said 3G eats up battery life, costs more, and is not that widely adopted yet.

Engineering is about striking a balance.

I wish the article had specified anything else Steve said about why they went with EDGE/WiFi instead of 3G, if anything, and what Steve meant by this being a "superior solution". Half data drives me crazy.

Keep waiting. It's not going to happen any time soon. Apple is married to AT&T for the time being (5 years, I believe?). Unless AT&T rolls out a 3G network, you won't see Apple come out with a 3G phone until their partnership has run its course.

I was a "wait for 3G" guy myself, but made the plunge after the price cut (and a pressing need for mobile e-mail access)....I'm astounded how good the iPhone is, absolutely shocked.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs told invited press in London on Tuesday that the iPhone will be available beginning November 9, 2007. Jobs also confirmed Apple's mobile partner in the UK will be O2. more

Fwiw, there's a very obvious reason why you will never see the Starbucks "feature" here in the UK - their WiFi network in every Cafe is supplied by T-Mobile and not O2.

I have to say that even though I desperately need a new phone (my crappy SE K750i as died on me so I am using a very old SE T68i until I get a new one), I'll definitely be sitting this one out. The cost of the phone on top of the contract is just ridiculous. Lack of 3G, I can live with as I'm based in London, so getting access to WiFi is not so much of a problem, but the price is just not worth it.

Incidentally, in response to the dig about less robust WiFi here in Europe - this just isn't the case in the UK. The problem with WiFi access is that it isn't generally free and that it costs far too much to use (e.g. 5/$10 for an hour at Starbucks/T-Mobile which can't be carried over if you don't use the full 60 mins).

That's the case here, too. T-Mobile operates Starbuck's hotspots, yet Apple still partnered with Starbucks (without mentioning T-Mobile - probably for contractual reasons).

I agree the wi-fi ubiquity argument was specious. That said, so are some of Jobs' arguments about 3G in Europe. 3G is everywhere. EDGE is actually harder to find. My guess it's all about production lines right now. Apple isn't Nokia. They can't just start up a new plant somewhere to crank out multiple versions of phones, at least not yet.

Good point! ISPs here in the UK tend to penalize users that actually use the 'unlimited data' they're supposedly paying for. I certainly don't remember that being the case when I lived in the US; here, it's a sick scam.

I haven't heard anything about AT&T's plan having fair usage: does it?

There's always going to be the next iPhone/iPod/iMac/laptop, and the one after that. How long are you going to wait?

But then there'll be other newer and nicer features that you'll want. Which new feature are you going to wait for?

Maybe he's implying that it's the right combination of speed and battery life...

Apple created the iPhone battery life issue themselves, by not making the iPhone's battery easily user replaceable.

Apple is married to AT&T only in the US. They can very well introduce a 3G iPhone is another market. Just because AT&T doesn't advance its technology doesn't mean Apple has to stand still and wait for them.
