Pixelmator costs $59,...

And that is $59; not $599. Hey Adobe are you watching what the casual user wants, and needs?

Look forward to a full Macworld review.

Re: Pixelmator image editing software released
I own a license. It's great for a 1.0 app. it's missing a few basics, however (some tools do not allow you to constrain to an axis and some filters such as Gaussian Blur use sliders that don't allow for fine adjustments so barely-perceptible blur isn't possible). Other than that, it gives me a reason not to buy the latest Photoflop and deal with the bloat associated therewith.

In short, it's a great start to a beautiful new tool.

I have Photoshop, and based on your comment I checked out Photoshop Elements. Man, did they ruin that application or what? That's about as bad as what Apple has done to iMovie!

So, I agree with your post. I will try to remember this application for those who need to do basic editing outside of iPhoto (which in iLife 08 is pretty good, but would rather have a dedicated application).

Re: Pixelmator image editing software released
There are times when I wish for the simplicity of the old MacPaint and MacDraw. Now that the current owners of Deneba Canvas are killing off the Mac version of that program (which I've been using for over 20 years!), and I'm looking back at the need to acquire a new paint/draw program... I realize how far the software has evolved beyond my reach and pocketbook. I retain my G3 powerbook just so I can run OS9 and a stable, easy to use version of Canvas that I own and am comfortable with.

Bit buggy though- maybe make it an open beta before asking $59...

Very nice start. I need a pen tool among other things before I even consider this as an alternative to Photoshop. I love the GUI and this is the direction I think Apple would take if they ever decided to do a Photoshop competitor (which I hope they do since I feel as if Adobe has been neglecting its Mac user base for some time now).
