Re: Mac Gems Weblog: Pixelmator 1.0.1
I was pretty surprised when I bought my first Mac about a year ago that there weren't any affordable alternatives to Photoshop for home users on OS X. But I was determined to shed my dependency on Windows despite my lack of success in finding a program comparable to Paintshop Pro, especially for the price. Graphic Converter has to be the most cumbersome and ugly graphics editor I have ever used, except perhaps the Gimp, so for the past year I've used a combination of Image Well, Intaglio and Easy Crop. It's about time there was an Adobe alternative for home users. It's just crazy to expect us to spend $500 for a photo editor.

No Wacom support is a deal breaker. and if you want to make a really large file like a 13x19 at proper resolution the program is beyond sluggish. For 50M and smaller great but no wacom support? PLEASE.

Photoshop Elements is a nice, reasonably priced alternative.

Which is also two versions back compared to Windows, with no Intel version in sight.

Didn't MacWorld run an article featuring Pixelmator a few weeks ago? What's the deal? Nothing else worth writing about?

Re: Photoshop Elements
Yes, I was aware of Photoshop Elements, but I didn't like it on Windows either and it's never been comparable to Paintshop Pro which is about the closest you can get on Windows to Photoshop for a fifth of the price. PSE is more Photoshop Lite and on top of that I don't think it's available as a universal binary.

Re: Mac Gems Weblog: Pixelmator 1.0.1
It wasnt long ago that the market was essentially Adobes Photoshop () at the top with Gimp and Graphic Converter fighting for a distant second and third place.

I'd be stunned if GC isn't the most widely-installed raster image editor in the Mac market.

There was a "first look" roundup of several new image editors a few weeks back. This is an official review of Pixelmator.

There must not be much else worth commenting on, either

You mean besides the announcement a few weeks ago that it would ship early next year?

Re: Mac Gems Weblog: Pixelmator 1.0.1
In all the recent hype about Pixelmator I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned cheaper alternatives. I love ChocoFlop ($15 donation ware). Its GUI is similar to Photoshop's, so not quite as impressive as Pixelmator, but it has lots of functionality. I especially like how the two finger track pad scroll gesture zooms in and out. This makes doing fine detail work much faster.

Yeah, besides that. Looks like I missed the announcement, thanks for telling me! But until they ship, all I have to remove from my statement is "in sight."

Does any of these apps have working curves and hue/saturation tools? These two tools are the most used in Photoshop...

Re: Mac Gems Weblog: Pixelmator 1.0.1
I really wish MacWorld did more in-depth reviews. Here is an example where they missed an important fact. They write in the review:

"In addition to the big features, Pixelmator’s “little things” make the program a pleasure to use. Take the eyedropper tool, for instance..."

It is common knowledge that the eye dropper has a major bug in Pixelmator (read their support forum). If you use the eye dropper to select a color and then use the paint bucket to fill an area with that selected colors, the new color does not match the old/selected color. They are blaming this on the color profiles (not sure why), but this is not the correct behavior for an image processing program. How can one work with the eye dropper if one can never predict the selected color will match??

In general like Pixelmator a lot and I think it will only improve with time. They seem to be working hard on it and I will continue to upgrade, but that sentence should've read "Pixelmator's "little things" make the program a pain to use. Take the eyedropper tool, for instance..."

Re: Pixelmator 1.0.1
Remember the 1984 commercial? Where everything was gray until the Macintosh crashed into The Ordinary and became spectacular and people celebrated its difference? Why has the Apple interface become this gray/dull blue wash of boringness and people think it's beautiful? I don't get it. I thought the Aqua interface was outstanding, and now Macs and their programs have turned into basically the kind of dull colors that PC's used to be 10 years ago.
