Re: How to: Upgrade a G5's optical drive
Two things that should be noted:
1) With regard to the "Yes (Unsupported)" message in Apple System Profiler, that can easily be resolved with Patchburn (
http://www.patchburn.de). It will create a burn support profile, and change ASP to say "Yes (Vendor Supported)."
2) If you're thinking of upgrading your own G5's optical drive, consider this when choosing a replacement brand. Apple used Sony, Pioneer and Toshiba drives. The Sony drives used a Phillips-head mounting screw with a thick collar. The Pioneer and Toshiba drives used a hex-head mounting screw with a thin collar. The result is that the Sony drives sit a little bit higher than the Pioneer and Toshiba drives, which is necessary for the tray to clear the top of the opening on the front of the case and to correctly operate the sliding door. If you have a Pioneer or Toshiba drive and get a replacement Sony drive, the mounting screws will result in the drive being mounted too high, and the tray will not clear the opening on the front of the case. Likewise, if you have a Sony drive and get a replacement Pioneer or Toshiba drive, the drive could be mounted too low, resulting in the tray hitting the sliding door incorrectly and getting stuck.
So I guess the simplest advice is to stick with the same brand of drive you have now when upgrading (though Pioneer and Toshiba are interchangeable).
Note that this does not apply to Mac Pros, only to G5s.
