No Sound at all

okay so My friend is running 10.3.9 (PPC) and she says all sound is gone. No applications have sound, no media have sound, even the "startup gong" and alert sounds are gone. It's not the speakers (my other firend tried using headphones, and still no sound), and it's definitely not muted.

I haven't checked it out myself yet, but I'd like a basic list of suspects to look over. She says the last thing she did was watch a movie at 2 am at which time the sound was good.

I'm almost certain its a system thing and not hardware, Although like I said I haven't seen it yet

Any help would be fantastic _
Thanks

**--Edit--**
after thinking it over a bit someone once told me that the logic board could be dead. I'm afraid this could be the case, but what would cause that to happen?

If you're not hearing the startup chime, I'd say it's a hardware problem (or maybe a PRAM thing). If a PRAM reset can't fix it, you might poke around inside to see if there's a loose cable (I don't think you said which Mac it is we're talking about). Otherwise, bring it into a repair shop.

Hardware failures happen. Sometimes it's abuse, but usually just a failed component somewhere.

Hey, how about that. Mine too. I wonder how long that's been like that. I'd swear the startup chime used to ignore the mute. Oh we'll. Hey, I got a restart out of the deal (first time in months, BTW)!

it has done that for as long as i remember, at least from 0s9 but i think longer than that.

i restart my computer everyday and find it runs better if i do that.
