Google's Android just a press release, says Ballmer

Microsoft's Steve Ballmer declined to comment on Google's Android platform on Thursday saying it was nothing but a press release at present. more

Ballmer is so out of touch with reality, that anything that he states has to taken with a large chunk of salt. I think of all the players, the most threatened is MS by Googles announcement. Open Source is coming after you Ballmer. Sure Linux is fragmented now, but maybe it needed one big uniting force, and Google might just be it.

Re: Google's Android just a press release, says Ba
Duh, there's the answer to all the FUD MS has put out all these years and continues to put out. I suddenly have a multiplicity of mantras for anything MS says:

Longhorn was just a press release.
WinFS was just a press release.
Palladium was just a press release
Internet Explorer 8 is just a press release.
Windows 7 is just a press release.
OOXML is just a press release.
Microsoft support of true open standards is just a press release.

Microsoft: "We are in favor of choice and fair competition" is just a press release (go ask WordPerfect, Netscape, and OS2).

Googles plans to enter the mobile industry with a cell phone platform might have impressed many in the industry but not Steve Ballmer

He had the same attitude about the iPhone. Why do the shareholders approve of such a dense, out-of-touch CEO? Over the past year their stock's range was only $26.60 - $37.50. Five years ago it was at about $27 and the highest peak is today.

Re: Google's Android just a press release, says Ballmer
Ultimately, Android is a great thing for the mobile handset market and an even better thing for Apple's iPhone market. Why, you might ask?? Well, if there were only two real competitive mobile operating systems, then people would likely say hey, let's program everything for the dominant one--most likely Microsoft, right??

If there are three or four operating systems that are competent, and relatively popular, standards need to be built and followed for interoperability.

This is why, I believe, that Linux was one of the best things to happen for Apple. It gave the world pause to consider that there was an alternative. And given that, there might be yet another alternative--Mac OS X.

Microsoft is freaking out about open source anything. I love it. Anything to loosen their death grip on consumers.

Ballmer's not all wrong
Ballmer is an idiot, but even an idiot can be right once in a while. Google announced that a committee of phone manufacturers is going to design this open cell phone platform. My thought is that too many cooks spoil the broth. If two or three companies were working together, maybe it would have a chance of being great. Have you ever sat at a meeting with a dozen or more people, and tried to get them to agree on anything? I think the idea of an open cell phone platform is fantastic, but I worry about it being designed by committee. One of the big reasons the iPhone is so damn goodis that Steve Jobs has the final say. He doesn't have to get 30 frigtards to agree before he gets anything done. I hope this open platform works out. It could change the cell phone industry but I am not betting on it. I'll wait and see.

Balmer's an idiot. But just like a broken clock is right twice a day, Balmer's right about this one. Google has a press release at the moment. Maybe they'll have more later.

To say such an idiotic thing, one KNOWS there is serious fear in his voice. Much as there can be some detriments to open source stuff, there's tons of good stuff happening there. The focus is on the end user, not the corporate coffers.

From the lips of the man who brought the world VISTA.
Then had to create a refund department for VISTA so people could downgrade back to a 6 year old OS.

He does make me giggle though. Like the village idiot.

Well, he should know. He is, historically speaking, the king of press releases.

Google vs. Microsoft (a bit OT)
Quote:

One of the reactions is, its another Linux platform, said Nigel Clifford. Theres 10, 15, 20, maybe 25 different Linux platforms out there. It sometimes appears that Linux is fragmenting faster than it unifies.

And this is a bad thing?

Each of those "Linux platforms" is based on the Linux kernel, probably a variant of 2.6.something. The rest of the "platform" is a combination of programs, tools, and utilities chosen by the "platform developer" so that the "platform" is optimized for a particular purpose (web services, email services, file server, desktop, etc.).

Let's see now... "Vista comes in how many versions? Why so many versions? Isn't that many versions confusing? Which one is right for me?". Substitute "Linux" for "Vista", and... voila! Microsoft FUD!

The problem here is that Google has chosen a non-Microsoft platform for their design. Since Microsoft sees Google as the "new enemy", it will use FUD and misleading (but not libelous) announcements in an attempt to prevent the Google platform from being given consideration by cell phone mfrs. And, since Google will probably use Linux as part of Android's "core", they will also use anti-Linux FUD as well.

The adoption rate of Google's "Android" platform will be driven by several aspects:

Price -- whether it is cheaper than Microsoft's embedded OS for cell phones

License -- whether Google places restrictions on its use, such as requiring free advertisements from third parties on your device

Restrictions -- whether Google requires support for formally-charged services, like cell phones or games

Support -- whether Android has support for Flash and Java out-of-the-gate and how much that support will cost

and so forth.

Apple created a cell phone using components of an openly-available operating system (FreeBSD), and used their own "value added" programs to make that phone one of the most important handheld products of 2007.

Cell phone mfrs will always do what is in their own best interests. If they are able to create a platform that works on their target providers (Verizon, Sprint, ATT, O2, etc.) and if the target providers find a way to remain profitable with that new platform, you can expect to see a Google phone in the future.

I applaud ALL of the developers who are thinking "outside the box" to bring us new platform paradigms in the handheld and cell phone market. If Microsoft is unwilling to innovate ("refinement" is NOT "innovation"!), then I totally support those who are willing to roll up their sleeves and try something totally different. We need to stop moving sideways (Microsoft) and start moving forward (Apple... and now Google).

Re: Google's Android just a press release, says Ba
I tend to agree with FSJ: ...has anyone else noticed the way Google is kind of desperately grasping at straws lately? They spend years trying to do something other than search and nothing works. Then, despite their big brains and IQ tests, they get totally blindsided by Facebook and have to gin up this ridiculous OpenSocial thing. Just like with this phone thing, they round up all the losers in that social networking space to form some dumb alliance. You know how it looks? It looks weak. Companies don't form alliances and consortia when they're winning. Also, whenever you see companies start talking about being "open," it means they're getting their butts kicked. You think Google will be forming an OpenSearch alliance any time soon, to help also-rans in search get a share of the spoils? Me neither.
