Re: Macworld UK: Details of U.K. iPhone launch
Congratulations to the UK, and welcome all to the ranks of iPhone owners!

I'm a US owner who bought mine on Day One, June 29th. Despite the various obvious limitations of v1, I've been quite pleased overall with the experience. This includes our Edge network with AT&T. Though "mileage" may vary with others, I haven't found the speeds to be all that bad.

On the positive side for me, at least, is the fact that, with the iPhone, I have fairly seamless access to the internet. For example, we have a postal box at our nearby UPS Store, and they've instituted a system of automatic email notification whenever a parcel is received. Now with the iPhone I get these notices almost immediately, and several times now I've been able to add the UPS Store to my errand itinerary while still out and about. I call that an enhancement!

As you'll learn quickly, the user interface of the iPhone is quite unlike any other device. It's easily viewable even in bright daylight conditions, and because of its relatively large size. And I find it easy, intuitive, and, for the most part, quite a bit of fun!

So carry on! Jolly good to have you all aboard!

I did not manage to the launch on Friday but have had my iPhone up and running since Saturday, not a hitch, glitch or bleep out of sync, could not be happier Worth every penny.

I don't wish to take out a contract with O2, I'm more than happy with T-Mobile thank you.

Does anyone know how much the unlocked French iPhone is going to cost?

Presumably there will be no issues with Apple software update rendering the phone useless like they appear to be doing in their cat and mouse game with the 'hackers'?

I was wondering if someone who bought the iPhone in the U.K. or Germany and using it on a T-Mobile network, could use the same phone on T-Mobile in the U.S. If not, how do they use it if they come to the U.S. Would it only work on an AT&T network?

It will roam on whatever networks that T-Mobile, O2, or Orange have agreements with here, which is likely both T-Mobile and AT&T, as well as some regional carriers. That said, you'd be paying European roaming rates, which aren't cheap.

SIM locking restricts a phone to a particular company's SIM cards, not necessarily to any network per se. That means that the standard UK iPhone will accept only an 02 SIM, and the German iPhone only a T-Mobile Germany SIM card (not a T-Mobile US SIM card). That said, unlocked iPhones will be for sale in both Germany and France, and there's no reason why those phones won't work with anyone's SIM card. It's possible Apple will try some techniques (such as limiting sales to those with German or French credit cards) to keep sales of the unlocked version to a minimum, but provided you get your hands on one, then it seems that you'll be able to use it on any GSM network.

I can't see Apple restricting credit cards over in Paris.

According to the UK press, there's a lot of people planning a trip over the channel to get their hands on an unlocked model.

So what about the software update issue with these French phones?
