I thought it already had? Didn't iSuppli say yesterday that it was the PS3 that was going to surpass the 360 by the end of 2008?

Worldwide, the Wii has already outsold the 360. Are you sure these guys are analyst? I'm pretty sure they're just glorified "guessers."

These same fortune tellers have pushed the PS3 to 2011. I guess they haven't paid attention to previous generation of consoles, since by that time we'll be looking to the newer genrationi.

I wonder if they adjust their count for "dead" 360's which were obviously sold but are no longer part of the "installed base"

What was that number? Ah yes, 16 % failure rate.

Re: Wii to displace Xbox 360 by end of 2008: iSuppli
Well... the machines are aimed somewhat at two different market segments, but more importantly there is maybe a 10% overlap in games, so I think it's a bit of hyperbole to claim that the Wii is going to "displace" either the Xbox 360 or the PS3 in any meaningful way. Unless you're only into movie tie-ins you're going to have to buy both to get all the good games.

No way, it's more like over 30%. Go to any FedEx (maybe UPS or American Postal Service--whatever Microsoft uses) and they'll recognize the "coffins" Microsoft sends out for people with broken 360's to send back for their replacements/repairs.

Ever since I got a PC I've trusted Apple with my computational needs and Sony with my video gaming needs. Microsoft just doesn't cut it with quality...

Re: Wii to displace Xbox 360 by end of 2008: iSuppli

I'm going to guess they mean that the Wii will overtake the Xbox 360 in the United States. The Wii has already about 22 million units worldwide, vs the 360 at 17 million. The US numbers though are Wii: 9.3 million to 360 10.8 million.

The Wii will overtake 360 in the US very soon for the dominant position everywhere, though it launched a year later.

I guess they can't take into account the number of Wii units that are gathering dust in the closet now that the novelty of the system wore off.

Of course, just look at eBay. 450 used Wii's for sale, 1500 used XBOX 360's for sale. Seems like the dusty 360's outnumber dusty Wii's by 3 to 1.

I don't own any gaming console, but the Wii seems very dominant and very much used in my surroundings. Just yesterday I had to listen to my desperate neighbour who was looking for any kind of Wii because she promised one to her nephew but found them to be sold out everywhere.

It's basically as dominant as Pokemon cards for Tickle Me Elmos were. You'd realize it's really gimmicky after playing it for an hour or two.

You obviously haven't played it enough. The Wii is here to stay as the games get better (Super Mario Galaxy anyone?) and make good use of the controls. It's still a young product.

It's obviously not for some people but it's definitely not a gimmick otherwise it wouldn't have sold this many units already. I can speak without bias here because I own a Wii and the 360. I enjoy them both thoroughly as they are two very different experiences.

Gimmick or not, I was gonna buy a Wii regardless, to get games like Super Mario and the new Metroid. That said, I vastly prefer the old controller. I don't like swinging my arm around or holding it raised in the air for long periods of time. The Wii-mote is fine for party games (which I don't play) and lousy for almost anything else. In fact I gave up on Metroid Prime 3 because I was fighting the controls more than the enemies.

A little exercise never hurt anyone.

It's not like you are holding your arms way up in the air and waving them around all crazy like. You can sit down and rest your arms on your sides or however you like. I have played super mario galaxy for hours on end without any pain or problems. That is just my opinion which may and this may not be true for others.
