Re: All about Apple TV movie rentals
I've been enjoying my Apple TV 2.0. A couple things I would like to see.

1. Change the menu for movie rentals to look like that in the movie trailers. I have a hard time seeing the tiny title below the hard to see cover art. The movie trailer menu has large titles and are alphabetized. It's easier to quickly scroll through this list of titles and pause on one to see the artwork and summary.

2. We need the ability to search titles better then just jumping around a list of letters one at a time. How about syncing my MacBook's keyboard to the ATV when needed? Like the MacBook Air shares an optical drive with another Mac. We could just go to iTunes and click on the ATV icon in the playlist window. The we could choose to click a box that says sync/pair keyboard to ATV. It would also be nice to see this added to the iPhone and iPodT.

What I would like to see on the iTunes Movie window is an "All Rentals" link.

Re: All about Apple TV movie rentals
Christopher,

Thanks for the informative piece. One question...

You say "In regard to downloads, the speed of your broadband connection is paramount. Wireless 802.11g and n (and wired Ethernet) are faster than anything your broadband connection can deliver. They’ll all be able to keep up and then some with data as it’s brought into your home."

But isn't a wireless router's connection only as fast as the wired broadband connection to which the router is connected? That is, if my cable modem gives me a 1 mbps connection, won't the wireless router connected to it be limited to 1 mbps, regardless of whether the router is 802.11g/n?

Right. What I'm saying is that the pipe in your network is bigger than anything coming into your house so even if you're pulling 6Mbs into your house from your broadband connection, a g network can take that and more. IOW, your network is not going to be overwhelmed by what it's receiving and therefore slow down the transfer of data.

Thanks, Chris. That clears it up for me. I consistently only pull about 1.5 - 2 mbps, so I'm on the fence about Apple TV.

I can understand that. For HD that means you'll have to plan ahead — grab a movie in the afternoon or early evening if you want to watch it that night. Standard-def, though, shouldn't be a problem. And honestly, SD looks pretty good on the ATV. Prior to the 2.0 update I spend a year watching standard-def content from the Apple TV and I found it perfectly fine. It's not Blu-ray or even a good DVD, but it's not bad.

Can you transfer movies rented on a computer to another computer? Say, from a desktop to a laptop?
