Re: Windows on External HD
Hi
While the older BIOS don't support it, the newer units support USB booting from practically any media. OEMs are nice and cheap and I by no means am discouraging them but realize that the EULA ( or a.k.a. SLA ) doesn't allow the user support from Microsoft but rather the OEM who installed / sold that copy of Windows to the user, which would be the user in such a case.

Once again I'll admit to not trying USB booting and, therefore, don't have any true insight but I'm still inclined to believe based on experience and the few items I've read that it requires at least some modification to succeed.

Re: Windows on External HD

New to Mac here. I ordered a Macbook Pro recently, and I am planning to use Windows on an external drive, since I don't want to partition the hard drive.

I was wondering if it is possible to just copy my hard drive with Windows XP in it to an external drive, so that I don't have to re-install Windows all over? I know I can take one drive from one PC and plug it to annother, and after Windows is done updating all the "new hardware", it would work fine. Would this be the case with the Macbook Pro and an external drive with a mirror copy of my PC drive?

Re: Windows on External HD
Johnny5,

The only one way you can copy your hard disk and hopefully make it run is by using Disk Utility and image it. The reazon you have to image the disk is that through imaging, you will be successfully copying the boot sector. Once you finish with that part, you will need to restore the image into the new drive.

Just copying the contents of the Windows hard disk will not work as the resulting copy will not have all the critical info that makes the hard disk a bootable disk by Windows standards.

Yea that is what I meant, my terminology isn't always the best. Thanks for the info, at least I know it might be possible. Worth trying before I have to spend a few days re-installing all the programs and drivers I accumulated over the years.

Re: Windows on External HD

I attempted to boot from the external USB DVD drive on a Mac air with a WIndows Installation CD inside and was not able to select the drive as an opiton. When the drive had the Leopard Install CD in it, it ran that immediately. Does the Air work differently than other Macs?
