Re: 25 native iPhone apps we hope to see
An iTunes controller. There is a pretty good web-based iTunes controller available (Signal, I think), and it works pretty well (switch tracks, change speakers, etc), but it's just too slow because it's a web app, not a native app. If I could use my iPhone to control iTunes, that would rule.

Re: 25 native iPhone apps we hope to see
Nice list and agree with most of it. Just:

  • make that to-do/task thing to include notes, really shameful that Apple is leaving all that out from syncing completely. Also please add multi-calendar support (at least colour coding and select calendar for new entries on the phone)
  • be very careful about that VoIP thing - a lot of carriers do exclude VoIP and modem use in their data flat rate fineprint - In my case VoIP or modem use would automatically incur no-contract/prepaid user charges for EDGE, that is 9 Cents per 10 Kb, can be a costly feature

I agree. I don't think a digital level is very useful for most people but a to do list would be fantastic. Oh, and it should have the ablity to have alarms set on it too.

I listed 9 ones on my blog, at http://blog.nonlinear.cc/interface/iphone-apps-ideas-round-up/

semacode reader would be a boon for business transactions: you take a picture of a business card and it translates it to a contact, for instance.

What about an Epocrates application? You folks need to realize that the IPhone is NOT a toy! With the exceptions of an ebook reader, a REAL calculator, Dictionary, video player, photo editor, PDF/Doc viewer, voice note recorder, video recorder, SlingPlayer, Messeging client (Yahoo), and a to do app, those other wish list apps are mere FODDER! Come on, let's really see some useful apps, not just TOYS! Epocrates is a MUST for medical professionals!

How about matching the iPod's functionality, by allowing me to use the iPhone as a hard drive to transport files? Come on Apple!

I agree. Voice dialing is an essential feature. In fact, the lack of this feature is one main reason I didn't buy an iPhone last Xmas for my wife. We live and drive in CA, and she is often driving with our 2 young kids. One more unnecessary distraction just isn't worth the risk.

I also use ePocrates on an hourly basis. It would be great to have ePocrates on an iPhone.

Ok so nothing is a "feature" of the iPhone os. The os is based on OSX. Everything that runs on the iPhone (even the dialer to make calls) is an app. The sms app, the camera app, the ipod app... etc. etc. are all apps, not part of the os.

It doesn't matter whether or not they are a part of the OS or an app. Those features are not going to be (legitimately) possible without APIs in the OS being made available to third parties. Given that they aren't available yet as stable APIs to Apple (otherwise those apps/features - that is, voice dialling, MMS, etc. - would already be there!) you are not going to see them from third party developers using the SDK.

Voice Dial! It has to be implemented in such a way that a touch of a Bluetooth Headset activates it. Even a Palm Treo has this feature!!! -Angelo

Re: 25 native iPhone apps we hope to see
You're kidding right! :)

Most of these are already available on for 1.1.4 Jailbroken iPhone!

The only reason for an SDK is Apple is too lazy and cheap to fix their own shortcomings!

Re: 25 native iPhone apps we hope to see

True. Some of the apps listed are already on Jailbroken phones. But, until the apps are an official release and not wiped out every time Apple does an update, they will not be widely adopted. Until wide adoption happens you won't see as many developers. It's a Catch 22 cycle that's coming to an end. I've read lots of good ideas on this forum. I'd love to see the Macworld guys who originally wrote the first list of 25 cull through this blog again and put out an updated list. Some items on the first 25 were good, but there have been some killer app ideas proposed since then.

Keep the great ideas coming. I hope developers are listening; you have an audience!

Re: 25 native iPhone apps we hope to see
Hi,

I'm not sure if this is really the correct place to request this, but here we go: As of July 1st CA drivers will be required to use hands free devices. I'd like an option that disables the "slide to unlock" and "enter passcode" screens when the iphone is connected to power, as it is when in my car. Placing a call then only requires a double-tap on the home button to get to my "phone favorites" from whence I can place a call - No more fumbling around trying to unlock the thing while driving.

Cheers,
Ian
