Is it time to change stripes for spots?

I'm still using v10.4 on all of my work and home computers. I told
myself a while ago that waiting until 10.5.2 was probably the best
plan. The cost of upgrading two home computers to 10.5 has made it easy
for me to wait. But now the day is at hand--10.2.5 is out. I'm almost
ready to pull the trigger, but I keep hearing little things that worry
me.
Worry #1: Mail. I depend heavily on Mail, both at home and at work.
My primary email accounts are both IMAP, so I have access to all of my
email from both home and work. I'm really excited about the
enhancements to Mail in 10.5; however, I've heard some people have had their mail corrupted in 10.5. Have any of you had problems with Mail?
Worry #2: Backwards compatibility. I have a lot of software on my
computer. Most of it is Universal Binary, but I imagine there's a good
amount of old software (I can't remember the last time I used a Classic
application, so I don't think that's a concern). How has it been for
you? Have you had to upgrade a lot of software, or have you been unable
to run some software that you were able to run under an earlier Mac OS?
I guess those are the two main ones. There's lots to be excited
about in Leopard: Quick Look, RSS in Mail (although since I've
discovered Google Reader, that's less of an enhancement), Time Machine
(but I don't know how much we'd use it with our laptops), etc. I'm
usually not this hesitant to adopt a new OS. Should I go for it?

Critical Apps: AppleWorks (I know, but it's still useful), MS Office 2004, Mail, Firefox, Safari, Butler, Civilization IV (yes, it's CRITICAL).

Systems: MacBook Pro 2.16GHz, 2GBRAM; and MacBook 2.0GHz 1GB RAM.

Thanks.

Re: Is it time to change stripes for spots?
Bookman,

I don't really think you will have any problems upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5.2. I have not had problems with my mail corrupting, and if you are concerned with that occurring you can always back up your mail account frequently.

As with programs being compatible, there really are not that many programs that will not work with Leopard. Adobe has come up with patches on most (if not all) of their programs making them run perfect with Leopard. They only programs that may not work with Leopard are ones that are closely integrated to the system. For example haxies, or certain backup utilities. However by now even most of those programs have become leopard compatible. Hope that helped.

Re: Is it time to change stripes for spots?
Mail has not given me any issues so far, and backward compatibility has been a nonissue. I run Office 2004 with no problems, and even have Creative Suite, and it runs fine. Most of the other programs I use are already Universal and have since been updated for Leopard.

With 10.5.2, most of the complaints people had about Leopard at the beginning have been fixed, and the OS has become even more rock solid.

Re: Is it time to change stripes for spots?
I'm as confused as you are. Probably worse!

I'm usually the last one to upgrade. So I'm running OS 10.3.9 G3 PowerPC, 400 MHZ. It works fine and I'd be lost without Classic. (My previous one was 25 MHz with a 230 MB HD.) I'm happy with the way my applications run. I know that the new stuff that I can't do yet is exciting. I hear about some cool application, download it, and then it says you must have 10.4. I didn't upgrade to OS X until a year ago. Well, it was installed for years, but I preferred Classic. Then I changed computers and I got DSL but it wouldn't work right in System 9. So I reluctantly gave in to OS X.

Now it's time to get a new iMac. I waited for the new models and OS 10.5. Then I heard it wasn't perfect (yet) and I decided to wait for the dust to settle. Now I'm hearing that Classic software won't run anymore. I use my Microsoft Word v5 and my Photoshop v6 all the time. I can't give them up and I can't afford new ones. And there are a few old games I want to keep playing (pong, etc.). Eudora's been my e-mail lady since 1994. I'd hate to give her up, but she's not keeping up with the times anymore. Boy, it was an adventure changing computers, upgrading to OS X, and using a new version of Eudora, all at once. Transferring mail was a nightmare! And that's the kind of frustration that I'm afraid I'll face if I switch to a G5, Intel, OS 10.5, and a flat screen. (No, the flat screen is part of the lure!)

So, please . . . answer a few questions? Anyone? Thank you!

If I get a new iMac,
Will my M-Word & P-Shop work?
Will my old scanner and printer work?
Will I have headaches transferring my personal files, my online bookmarks, my cookies?
Last time, after hours of experimenting unsuccessfully with the joys of Ethernet and networking, I transferred my files 2 dixie cups, a string, and 2 100MB ZIP drives.

Should I continue living in the past?
Should I go for that sleek 20" flat screen state-of-the-art iMac now?
Should I go for the less impressive, less frustrating, pre-INTEL model at a slightly reduced price?

Thanks. I appreciate your help.

Time to move up to Leopard and bite the bullet. Eventually all that old stuff will not be supported anyway.
Leopard is solid (Did you not read about the 300+ new features that were offered when Leopard was announced).

Nope (I am assuming you mean your old OS 9 versions...Word 5 and Photoshop 6). Classic is no longer supported/available on Intel Macs. There are emulators that will run OS 9 on an Intel Mac, but they tend to be painful to use and are not likely the best option for "mission critical" stuff (see this thread for some discussion on that: OS9 for MacBook). You will need to upgrade those applications or go to other applicaitons that serve the same purpose.

Maybe...maybe not. What is your old printer and scanner? The printer is more likely to work. You are more likely to have issues with the scanner.

In general, you likely should have little trouble transfering files and even bookmarks (cookies might be tough). The biggest challenge might be email messages and addressbooks. If you have all that stuff in Eudora, then you could have some difficulties. Some programs don't make it easy to export email and contacts. I believe that Mail (and Entourage) have easy ways to import Eudora stuff, but I don't recall for sure...it has been a while since I imported email into a new computer.

No...you should embrace the future...you will have to at some point, but ultimately it is your choice. You could procrastinate on embracing the future by going with a "newer" used PowerPC (such as a G4 or G5 based) iMac or Tower and certainly move up to Tiger (OS 10.4). I still run a G4 Tower for the odd occasion that I need an OS 9 application (I also still have my G3 Powerbook sitting around that will natively boot into OS 9 instead of having to use Classic in OS X). And G5s and some G4s will even run Leopard (OS 10.5). And if you are NOT ready for the future but still want a flat screen iMac, then you can get a G5 iMac...they have flat screens.

OK, Thanks. I see now that I have to get a new iMac to keep up with the technology and keep the old G3 so I can continue to live in the past. I'll have to figure out how to connect them so I can transfer files easily. That is possible with ethernet, right?
Thanks for your help!

Yes, you will be able to do it with ethernet assuming the G3 has an ethernet port. Another option is Firewire target disk mode if the G3 has Firewire (you did not specify type of Mac other than processor...some of the original Powerbook G3 laptops did not Firewire ports).

The G3 is a 450MHz Power Mac running OS 10.3.9. It has Firewire. I just looked up "Firewire Target disk mode" in "OS 10 the Missing Manual". That sounds like the perfect answer! Thank you!
