MacBook Pro: 15.4" or 17"?

I'm graduating high school in May, and my Dad wants to get me a MBP. He's a very generous person and says he'll get me the best model with the fastest processor, highest capacity RAM (maaaybe not from Apple), etc. At first I was only considering getting the 15.4" model, and then just yesterday he starts talking to me about getting me the 17".

Needless to say i was a bit shocked, and I started telling him about how I was only planning on getting a 15" and still have money left over for some accessories such as a keyboard and a bluetooth Mighty Mouse. But now that he mentioned the possibility of the 17", I'm having a hard time trying to decide.

The reason why I'm debating is because of the actual case. The 15" looks all nice and neat with its power button on the right speaker and just enough space for your palms to rest when not typing, and it looks like everything has its own place. Very neat.

The 17" however, has these same qualities, but the actual surface area is much greater, and since it IS a notebook, that is not ideal. Even though I'd be getting more screen real estate and a higher resolution.

And so this is where I'm getting to:

To owners of either models: What do you like in particular about the MBP you have? Likes, Dislikes, Pros, Cons, those sort of things. Any contributions are greatly appreciated!

I'd like advice from owners of both models, your likes dislikes and so on. All advice is greatly appreciated!

I like my first gen 15" MacBook Pro (Core Duo...NOT Core 2 Duo). I certainly drool over the newer MBPs with the faster processors, Firewire 800 port, and ability to go to 4 GB of RAM (the last is probably the biggest issue...I am limited to 2 GB)...but mine works for my needs.

Whether to get an 17" vs. a 15" to some degree comes down how you will use it, in my opinion. If you will be lugging it around and using more as a portable laptop, then the 15" might be better. If you are going to use it more in one spot and not lug it around too much, then a 17" might be better...although you can get a monitor for use with EITHER if you want a bigger screen when using it at home at your desk. While the 17" is not that much more heavy than the 15", if you have to lug it around lot, then every little bit can help.

A lot of this comes down to what you are going to use it for. If the majority of your usage will be email, web, and writing college papers in Word, the 17" is much too much screen space. Remember, the resolution of the 17" is the same as the resolution for the 20" Apple Cinema Display! A lot of it will be wasted, yet you will always have to carry that extra with you. If you are going to college, you will probably be carrying the laptop constantly, so size and weight will count.

The users who get the most out of the 17" are those who work daily in apps with a document surrounded by 20 palettes with 50 little controls and sliders in each palette, so they need as much room to spread out as possible. Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, Aperture, Logic, those kinds of apps. If you are not using those kinds of apps, you should ask yourself it the 1440x900 screen of the 15" is probably enough. For me, it is. I'm always going to have a 15" because I like the modest size.

The other argument in favor of the 17" is spreading out multiple apps. If you really want to have email, web, Word, and chat windows all open simultaneously without overlapping each other, then maybe the 17" is better. But if you enjoy using Expose and Spaces to manage screen space, then the 15" might be enough for that.

Screen space is most of the reason to get the 17", because Apple doesn't do much else with that extra case space. They don't expand the keyboard for you, they don't add another accessory/drive bay, you can't add more RAM than the 15", and they don't add ports or slots except for 1 more USB as far as I know. If Apple took better advantage of the bigger case, the 17" would be more compelling.

I'm wondering how much better the 17" model deals with heat. I'm also wondering if 7200RPM will run too hot.

Re: MacBook Pro: 15.4" or 17"?
It all depends on what you'll be using it for.

If the computer is for when you go to college, you might find the 17" to big, heavily and bulky to lug around all day. Plus, it will occupy most if not all of the desk area when in class.

I have a 15" MBP, and when I see someone use a 17" is just seems too unwieldly large. Its a nice machine on its own, just consider what you'll be using it for.
