I can't imagine a scenario where switching back to Power Architecture would benefit Apple. One of the great selling features of the new Macs is the ability to run Windows. Even if the consumer never takes advantage of this feature.

What's the relationship between PA Semi and IBM? IBM is making substantial gains in PowerPC architecture implementation, power, etc.

It seems to me that Apple could make use of low-power CPUs in smaller-than-laptop devices, e.g. iPhones and similar contraptions.

Apple has demonstrated twice the miracle of switching processors beneath its user base. I'd never say "never" about future processors across the Apple product line :-)

Re: Report: Apple buys low-power processor designer
This acquisition is most likely for Apple's so called mobile platform. If Apple controls the chips in the iPhone and its sister products (whatever they may be) there is no danger of clones showing up later down the line. It would be like the PPC days of the Mac. I can't help but think of those two bridges in Apple's last announcement for the 2008 World-Wide Developers Conference (WWDC).
Just my thoughts anyway.

Maybe we'll finally see a 3GHz PowerMac!

Intel makes the Atom line of Low power Chips, although now with this is questionable what apple will do.

Maybe Apple just wants to still be a player in the PowerPC market since they were part of its development for so long?
