Re: Widespread iPhone shortages fuel 3G rumors
It seems really early for them to be running out of stock now, since WWDC is just shy of a month away, and I presume Steve Jobs' keynote will feature said 3G iPhone update.

Has anyone heard rumor of updates to the iPod touch as well? 802.11n? Browse shared libraries? Wireless update?

Re: Widespread iPhone shortages fuel 3G rumors
Perhaps the 3G iPhone will be announced sooner than June 9th. I doubt very seriously Apple was caught off guard this much so as to lose an entire month of sales.

Note that RIM got a lot of buzz today with it's "Bold" announcement, and it won't even be out until August. Who's to say Apple won't announce the 3G iPhone tomorrow (and shipping very soon) to try to steal some thunder (or at least prevent other manufacturers from stealing any of theirs). Everyone knows it will have 3G. If the next iPhone adds something like video calling and advanced GPS, it will sell like hotcakes.

You can forget about 802.11n, it is seriously power hungry.

But you can just tell that APple is on a learning curve on this one, possibly with some internal struggles as to strategy going on. An abrupt price drop, exclusive deals them non-exclusive, and the inability to maintain supply. They seemed to aim to be above the fray of the mobile phone industry, but have been sucked into some of the industry norms.

Apple is scheduled to have a news conference on June 9th to show the new 3G iPhone... Why would they release it early. I think people are waiting until June to get the new iPhone instead of buying them now. It would be like buying a new computer right before the Duo came out. Is the new phone, aside from G3, also going
to have a GPS chip?

I imagine google earth with a blinking star
saying "you are here!"
Would that not be great?

Re: Widespread iPhone shortages fuel 3G rumors
Well they have the date correct, June is a very important month for Apple...it does mark the one year annvy. but also its the realse date of their new iPhone....a really good friend of mine works for the local AT&T store and she told me to hold off from buying the iPhone right now since the new iPhone will be hitting the shelfs on June 1st

So you now know people the new iPhone will be hitting shelfs near you in June of 08'

Only a few people know for sure, but it makes a lot of sense. GPS is the next big thing in mobile phones. They will become as ubiquitous as cameras are now. Google Maps already works well with the built-in GPS in other phones, such as BlackBerry and Nokia smartphones. Apple will surely add some nice software. The real question here is whether the 3G iPhone will have some game-changing feature such as the first really usable (and first altogether in the US) video calling system. That is completely dependent on AT&T right now, as they are the only ones in the US with a network that can technologically support video calling right now.

Re: Widespread iPhone shortages fuel 3G rumors
3G and GPS are only two of many missing pieces which iPhone v2.0 needs to satisfy. There are a litany of standard phone and smartphone (offline PDA) capabilities which the Blackberry (and even the aged Palm OS) has performed adeptly for years which are sorely lacking from the current iPhone. I have a detailed comparison between the two devices in my blog: http://blog.manifestyourreality.com/?p=15. Otherwise I'm a huge Apple fan; if I could use an iPhone for my small (non-enterprise scale) businesses to the extent which my Blackberry competently serves, I'd happily switch.
