iCal and Entourage syncing

As stated in an earlier post I was having trouble syncing my Palm with iCal. In the course of trying to resolve that problem (which I have temporarily solved by deciding not to use the Palm and deleting the Palm software including HotSync), I found that an extra Entourage calendar had been created in iCal. When I deleted that Entourage calendar, I had no data left, so I undid the delete. Also data had been lost in Entourage. I went to the Apple forums to find a possible solution and found the following :

. I un-checked the box in Entourage - preferences - Sync Services - Synchronize events and tasks with iCal and .Mac.
2. I went to iCal and deleted the Entourage calender.
3. I went back to re-check the box in Entourage - preferences - Sync Services - Synchronize events and tasks with iCal and .Mac.
4. I chose the option to replace Sync Services data with Entourage data.

iCal created a new calendar Entourage (like it did before) and all my Entourage data showed up properly sync'd. The sync also works now between the two programs.

However when I tried this, both calendars were wiped out, except for one or two stray events! When I went to the Finder and performed a search, I was able to see my iCal events, but could not figure a way to restore them to the actual application. I was not able to locate the Entourage calendar events. My thinking is that if I could restore the iCal events, then I could sync iCal with Entourage. Is any of this possible or is all lost. Oh I have a back of my pre-Leopard iCal on an external hard drive, can I use that to recover most of my iCal events, and if so how do I do that?

I know this is a long post, but I would appreciate any and all help. I have an Intel iMac running Leopard, and am using Entourage 2004.
