Here's the deal: I recently upgraded my eMac from Jaguar to Panther. Everything seems fine, but I can't play any online games at sites like Pogo.com or AOL. As a game is loading, I get an error message that I need to install java. All the instructions on how to do this clearly are intended for Windows users.
Any idea how to add/install/revive java so I can play a few online games?
Here is the Java v1.4.2 update Grant was talking about if you don't have it, but if you are using AOL browser forget it. Also, there are many online games, as you mentioned, that are NOT Mac friendly.
We've got only 10.3 on the eMac, so we need Java 1.4.1. HOWEVER, when we tried to download this software, it won't download. I clicked on the download button and the DL starts, but it just stops after a couple of steps. We are on AOL and not having the best luck initiating a download. We'll keep trying other solutions.
Only other option I see is DOWNGRADING to Jaguar, where the applications and websites we want worked. Would like to stay in Panther, but it's not working so far.
One thing many AOL'ers do with DLs is: Launch AOL, and 'THEN' launch Safari, or any other browser for DL'n. Another thought is if you get an inactive disconnect.. create a chat room so AOL thinks you are active.
An extension of the latter suggestion: If you have a buddy list set up, simply open AIM or iChat. It will ping the server at regular close intervals to see who is online ... your system will appear to your ISP that you're constantly busy, so it won't time you out. Not 100% effective, but better than not using it. Another trick is to set your mail preferences to check for incoming mail every minute.
Until I get broadband, I'm stuck with AOL dial-up. My question is: does having AOL open at the same time as Safari slow the connection down at all? I've heard that AOL takes up a lot of bandwidth. Please forgive my gross incompetence.
Also, will Safari utililize AOL's ability to "make web surfing up to 5 times faster than standard dial-up". I'm not sure what it's called, but it compresses incoming text and graphics files to speed up browsing (but not downloads). Most ISPs have something similar nowadays, but always call it something different like: "TopSpeed" or "Accelerator". Again, please forgive my gross incompetence.

Not at all because you are using one or the other. And I doubt you'll see any difference in Safari's speed vs AOL's built-in browser with dial-up. The amount of RAM you have does come into play when launching both AOL & another browser tho. I'm not familiar with 'Accelerator' or 'TopSpeed' at all...sorry. When in AOL's Meun-> Prefs -> WWW ->UNcheck Use Compressed Images if using it's browser. AOL's mail notification is just like DL'n...doesn't show activity. You'll be happy when you get broadband....duhh, as most do. I think it was just offered to Grant and he snagged it quickly
I used to play bridge on Pogo every day for several years both with Panther and more recently with Leopard. Earlier this year after I upgraded to OSX 10.5.2 I started having problems and despite going to Pogo help several times and also posting on this and other forums the problem persists. I have a feeling that there is some bug in the Pogo game Applets, as sometimes if I log out and then log back in I am able to play. Also clearing the Safari Cache as well as the Java caches sometimes works but not always. Something has changed and I am beginning to believe the problem is with Pogo. I only hope someone will be able to put a finger on the solution.
