Microsoft Office Incredibly Slow

Guys,

I have used MS Office for years and consider Excel to be one of the finest applications I own. I've just recently upgraded to 2008 from 2004 and found it so slow that I went back to 2004. When the 12.1.1 update came out I gave it a try and although the speed seems acceptable now it still is incredibly slow to both load, open, calculate, and save. I use a PowerMac and not an Intel Mac -- could this be the reason? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

My Specs:

PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5 GHz, 1.75 Mb Ram.
Mac OS X 10.5.4
Internal 200 Gb & 160 Gb, External 250 Gb, 2 External 500 Gb
ATI Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition.

Yup. Office 2008 was designed for Intel Macs. I hear it is fairly spritely
on them.
