Yes, MS is pushing the top down approach to IT departments that want a top down approach. No one takes any risks, no one gets fired and the users suffer the same old mediocre product and experience.

What's interesting is that Apple's "business phone" has only been out a couple of weeks and already MS feels the need to "remind" people of their existence. Guess they're scared, if not desperate.

Re: Microsoft: Forget iPhone, we’re still number two in business
Regardless of whether iPhone is riding on hype or not, Microsoft is doing a poor job promoting Windows Mobile platform. Even on 6.1, the UI is still too Windows-like (ugly, and Start menu still?!) and IE Mobile still does not share the same layout engine as Windows counterpart. And horrible promotional website to boot (Windows Mobile Apps page requires installing Silverlight!)

And by this attitude and numbers, we could say the same thing back to Ballmer about the Zune vs. iPod, and Nintendo or PS3 vs. XBox.

Remeber that mentioning stats, can backfire you.

In the strongest argument: Mobile Windows in business 9:1

iPod vs Zune 25:1 So in their (M$) words: “So you can see the hype versus the reality.”

How pathetic! MS sounds like a whiny, dying dog. I can't wait to see how their supposed new ad campaign to counter all of Apple's ads turns out. I bet they'll be about as pathetic as this article.

Re: Microsoft: Forget iPhone, we’re still number two in business
In other words, the smart phone environment is roughly similar to the desktop one: Microsoft has more applications, the great majority of applications are specific to some business, most of the applications suck, and both companies will continue to be successful in the markets they've chosen to target. Sure there's some overlap but in general Microsoft targets business while Apple targets the consumer.

Microsoft is just like McDonald's. They brag about how many Big Macs have been served, but it's still some of the worst food on the planet. Microsoft is all about quantity, and nothing about quality.

Where I come from, "number 2" has a slightly different connotation. When coupled with "business", it makes me wonder if some headline writer is not laughing up his sleeve. It does seem appropriate, however.

Re: Microsoft: Forget iPhone, we’re still number two in business
Bottom line, they know they have a clearly inferior product, they know people don't want WM phones. They know developers find their tools way more difficult to master. And last they know Windows Mobile has zero chance of dominating the market. Symbian, Linux, iPhone and even possibly Android are going to show people just how bad Microsoft is at designing software that people want to use.

Pathetic.

Re: Microsoft: Forget iPhone, we’re still number two in business
Oh, just one more thought about this portion of the article:

"Moreover, seven of the ten largest companies in the world ranked by Fortune magazine bought Windows Mobile phones, including one enterprise that bought 100,000.
Rockfeld declined to name the company or even its line of business. “That would give it away,” he said. One possibility is Wal-Mart Stores."

Could Rockfeld be talking about Microsoft buying 100,000 of their own phones? I sure hope all their employees are forced to use their own phones. They might as well be stuck using inferior technology while they force their crap on all the other big enterprises who blindly follow the MS bandwagon as it leads them off a cliff into bored obscurity.

Re: Microsoft: Forget iPhone, we’re still number two in business
This is just sad. The more you tell us how great you are, the less inclined we are to believe it. MS sells to people who feel as though they must buy their products. Apple sells to people who actually want to buy their products. We'll have to see if MS can build something desirable that doesn't have the word "Xbox" in the title.

Re: Microsoft: Forget iPhone, we're still number two in business

I guess we know what keeps MS up at night. Like its windows counterpart, they do have an arm and a leg of advantage over the iPhone. But as it has been said before, more doesn't necessarily mean better. I do have to admit that it is a good thing that the iPhone has a low market share in business today, so they can iron out the glitches from the 2.0 software (yes, I'm looking at you lazy contacts application). Because if they had the market share of MS, Apple would be on the receiving end of the "hi I'm an iphone" commercials, sitting in a therapy session frozen and crashing.

Eagerly awaiting 2.0.1.

Does anyone besides me find it odd that at the Apple Store, they use Windows Mobile devices to check you out when you make a purchase?

Re: Microsoft: Forget iPhone, we're still number two in business
Microsoft definitely maybe selling more well just take a look of how many different phones they have.... none of them are anywhere compared to the iphone 1.0 or the 3g and i dont think they will ever come anywhere near apple through there operating systems or there phones or mp3 playing devices. apple is the new generation its what everyone wants everyone wants an iphone not some windows mobile crap that dont do half the stuff 3g does
