Can't erase desktop files in Jaguar

Hello! I can't Trash a bad downloaded lexmarkdriver.sit file on my Jaguar desktop, won't change the options when I try alter the permissions in Get Info... and Trashing it gets a window saying can't until other apps finishing... what gives?
Also, new OSX Lexmark Z32 driver won't print, keeps asking me to change cartridges when new ones already... and going thru all the Print Center commands not helping...
So far, new Jaguar upgrade less than cool... Thanks in advance for some advice...

This is happening even after a reboot? Can you remove it through the terminal?

I would contact Lexmark directly in regards to the other issue.

Re: Can't erase desktop files in Jaguar
Try this:

1) Open your terminal
2) Type 'ls' (look for a folder called Desktop)
3) Type 'cd Desktop' (case is important-Use tab to auto complete
4) Type 'rm filename' (don't forget to use auto complete to make this easier)
5) Will take a sec for the desktop to update itself (Can see the disparity between Aqua and Darwin here). You might need to click on the area where the rile was or reboot for the screen to update.

This should get rid of it unless you don't have the correct permissions to do this. (Then you will need to run X's built in Permissions checker).

Re: Can't erase desktop files in Jaguar
Hello, this is my first post in these macworld forums. I too have the problem of the files stuck on my desktop. I am a converter and dont have any knowledge about switching from OS 9 to X. Can someone give me a play by play on how to take off those files.

Thank you!

Re: Can't erase desktop files in Jaguar
CaliJoe - go to the system prefs pane (look under the Apple on the top left side of your FINDER(desktop) screen. When the System prefs pane opens select "Startup Disk". It should show your OS 9 system folder ***ONLY IF IT IS ON ANOTHER PARTITION. If not you will have to startup from your Startup CD and go to your User folder on your internal hard drive and open the folder called DESKTOP. The file should be in there and should be trashable.

It would be much easier to maintain your computer if you had two partitions - the first with OS X and the second with OS 9.x. Then you could easily reboot into OS 9 to do these repairs.

Re: Can't erase desktop files in Jaguar
Calijoe, if you are in OSX, go to the dock and click on System Preferences. After it opens, go to the Startup Disk, click once on it and the next panel will show the operating systems you have on that HDD. Highlight the Mac OS9 icon and then click on restart. You will restart in OS9. You can trash the files from the desktop.

To get back to OSX, go to the Apple - go to Control Panels, go to Startup disk, click on the OSX icon, then restart and you are now back in OSX when it restarts.
