Games and sys requirements

I am still kind of new to the mac. I was wondering are the system requirements usually lower for a mac then a pc? For example if a pc game needs aleast 800Mhz will the Mac be lower like 500Mhz or something like that.

Re: Games and sys requirements
There's no straight answer to that, since it depends on what sort of technology the game uses, how efficient the coding was done and other factors.

Mac system requirements often seem higher, however, since some users are familiar with Apple's benchmarks that show Macs far outperforming faster Pentium-based PCs in various operations for graphics and so on. There's certainly merit to that argument, but alas, it doesn't usually translate to games.

I for one will never trust them when they post the system requirements. It certainly doesn't look truthful, not the way Jedi Knight plays on my flat panel iMac...

They said that system requirements are a G3 processor with OS 9 and OS X, G4 with OS 9 and OS X. I mean based on how it plays on my iMac, They shouldn't put that it plays on a G3!

I don't see anything wrong with being a console gamer and a Mac gamer, or a PC gamer too if that's your thing. Heck, I have four consoles in my office alone and another three connected in the living room.

Mac still offer a superior gaming experienc for certain types of games than consoles do. I prefer strategy games, role playing games and simulations on the Mac, for example. And at least until I upgrade to an HDTV system, my Mac still offers way better graphics than most of my console systems do.

Re: Games and sys requirements
Until now, I'm really considering an Xbox. It has the best graphics. I'm also considering a powermac, so games will play better on that.

Hey Peter, is there anyway to get more from your graphics card, maybe a shareware of freeware program that I don't know about?

With regards to overclocking video cards or optimizing systems on the Mac to get more graphics oomph, to be honest, there's sadly little out there. The only source for graphics drivers is Apple, unless you have a retail ATI card installed in your machine, and no one's really stepped up to the plate with custom software in that respect.

Re: Games and sys requirements
I wonder why Apple can't come out with drivers...Is it so much to ask?

Re: Games and sys requirements
Well, Apple does come out with drivers, when the operating system is updated. It's just not exactly a "user serviceable" component of the operating system.
